The Clairton Bears (14-0) have had a season full of record-breaking achievements and history-making wins. Senior standout Tyler Boyd wants a little more.
Boyd, the WPIAL’s second-leading rusher, ran 15 times for 244 yards, caught one pass for 33 yards, scored five rushing touchdowns and even intercepted a pass on defense in a 53-0 blowout of Berlin-Brothersvalley (11-2) in the PIAA Quarterfinals Friday night at Somerset High School.
Boyd’s second touchdown broke former Hopewell star and current Pitt running back Rushel Shell’s WPIAL record for touchdowns in a career (110). The Clairton star now has 114 touchdowns in his career and 47 this season.
Berlin-Brothersvalley hung tough through the first quarter, trailing only 6-0 after the first 12 minutes. But that’s when Boyd took over, scoring on spectacular, video game-like runs of 17, 1, 19, 8 and 78.
Clairton Quarterback Armani Ford would complete 6-of-8 passes for 123 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown to Terrish Webb, as well as rushing for another.
Amazingly, Clairton was able to overcome 11 penalties for 110 yards, including three personal fouls. The Bears outgained the Mountaineers 395-127 in total yardage.
In addition to breaking Shell’s record, Boyd moved into seventh place among WPIAL career rushers, ahead of Charleroi’s Darrell Harding and Aliquippa’s Chico Williams and is only 38 yards from passing Montour’s Julian Durden for sixth place.
The win for Clairton is a Nation-best 61st in a row and fifth-consecutive victory over a District 5 opponent, outscoring their PIAA Quarterfinal foes 221-0 in those games.
Drew Glotfelty rushed 21 times for 74 yards, caught four passes for 55 yards and threw the ball three times for the Mountaineers. Berlin turned the ball over four times, including two interceptions by Blake Miller and gained just 33 yards of offense in the second half.
The 3-time defending PIAA Class A Champion Bears scored on seven of their ten drives, with one being ended by halftime and another with backups playing.
Already playing without lineman Devonte Harvey (knee), the Bears lost Pitt recruit and WR/DB Titus Howard to a dislocated left elbow in the second quarter. Howard would be taken from the field in a stretcher and to a local hospital for evaluation.
Clairton will need him in the PIAA Class A semifinals next week, as they take on Port Allegany and Quarterback Matt Bodamer, the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year, who is the first PIAA player to ever throw for over 10,000 yards in a career.
