With the re-classification of girl’s volleyball for the 2016 season, the Chartiers Houston Buccaneers find themselves in a section with both Fort Cherry and defending WPIAL Champion and PIAA Champion Bishop Canevin, on top of losing its best player, Kylee Levers to the Pitt Panthers’ volleyball squad, and two other key pieces from last year’s section champion squad. Going into play Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Lady Bucs were 3-1 in section 3 of 1A and set for a battle with the previously 2-2 Brentwood Spartans.
In each section contest this season for the Lady Bucs, the final of the match has been in straight sets and Tuesday evening was no different, only it resulted in Chartiers-Houston (3-2) falling by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-21 to Brentwood (3-2).
Juniors Bre King and Maddie Simpson were forces up front in the loss as well was senior Macie Kesneck, but the Spartans got everything they needed and more from outside hitter Molly Huffman both from the set line and at the point of attack. Huffman, along with senior Madison Pelkey led Brentwood en route to the big section win.
The first and second sets were controlled for the most part by Brentwood in simple fashion, in which King and Simpson told us after the match on air that Char-Houston had a tough time communicating and in serve-receive in the first two sets.
They also said they didn’t perform to the best of their abilities in set three either, even though they had an early lead and were competitive in the final set of the night, but a Brentwood comeback and finishing effort led to the final of three sets to none.
Next up for the Spartans is a matchup Thursday night with Sto-Rox before two big matches next, the first of which is next Tuesday, Sept. 27 against Bishop Canevin.
The Lady Bucs will regroup and try and put the straight-set loss behind them before returning to the court at Burgettstown on Thursday before matching up with both Fort Cherry and Bishop Canevin next week.
