While there was plenty to focus in on Saturday including the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships, the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Sectionals, the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships and the WPIAL Basketball Quarterfinals, there were other titles decided on the final weekend in February. Here is a brief recap of the Pittsburgh City League Basketball Championships, the SWCAC Basketball Championships ad the State Rifle Championships.
2013 PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Westinghouse Bulldogs 61 – Perry Commodores 52
Shaquan Johnson scored 18 points and a 17-7 burst in the third quarter proved to be the difference as Westinghouse captured their first boys City League basketball title in 15 years and only the Bulldogs second crown since 1972. The game was deadlocked at 28-28 at halftime when a big third quarter by Westinghouse proved to be the difference. Aaron Lyons had 15 points and Robert Bailey scored 12 for the new District 8 champs who improve to 15-8. Perry was led in scoring by Shakeem Cox, who scored a game-high 19 points while Devin Lyles added 15 for the Highlanders, who fall to 12-13.
2013 PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE GIRLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Westinghouse Bulldogs 54 – Allderdice Dragons 42
Westinghouse boys making it to the district finals was noteworthy, however the Bulldogs girls team playing for the City League crown is standard stuff. For the 26th consecutive season, Westinghouse was in the girls basketball title game and for the tenth time overall and first time in four years, the Bulldogs sealed the deal by winning the District 8 championship by 12 points over Allderdice. Westinghouse jumped out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and led 30-15 but halftime and were never threatened in the second half. Jasmine Myers scored a game-high 23 points for the Bulldogs while teammates Brittany Jackson scored 18 and LaShae Stinson added 11 points for Westinghouse, which improves to 16-9. Sierra Fordham led Allderdice with 16 points while teammate Sydnee Abernathy chipped in with 13 points as the Dragons fall to 12-13.
