2016 WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Day Two Recap & Results

Some of the best wrestlers in the state of PA, as well as the country, were on display on Saturday at Penn Hills for the AAA WPIAL Championships and they did not disappoint. 11 out of the 14 top seeds in each weight class found themselves on the top of the podium, with the lone exceptions being at 106, 132, and 285.2016 PIAA Wrestling Class AA Southwest Regional Results
The top Class AA wrestlers around Southwestern Pennsylvania spent Friday and Saturday in Canonsburg doing battle for the top five spots in the upcoming 2016 PIAA Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships next week. Here are the results from Canon-McMillan High School.

The AAA WPIAL Championships started Friday at Penn Hills with news of wrestlers missing. A pair of scratches to seeded wrestlers adjusted two different weight classes. The first was at 132 pounds, where number five seed Ryan Yocum of Trinity was a scratch. The other was at 152 pounds where Micah Kusturiss of Canon McMillan, who was a four seed, was a scratch due to an ankle injury.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 02/29/2016

The talent in AA Wrestling was on display this weekend, as many wrestlers repeated as WPIAL champions. Saturday’s finals at South Fayette High School featured 9 returning WPIAL Champions, including 5 of which who had already won multiple WPIAL crowns before taking the mat for the finals. The most impressive of which was George Phillippi of Derry. At 138 pounds, Phillippi became the 26th wrestler all time to win four WPIAL championships. He did by defeating Evan Myers of Southmoreland 9-3. For Myers, who is a senior, this is the third straight season he finished as a WPIAL runner-up.2016 WPIAL Individual Wrestling Class AAA Sectionals Results
The field for the 2016 WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships is now set following the results from all four Triple-A sectionals on Saturday. Day one of the WPIAL Championships is in the books and many of the top wrestlers are still alive in the winners bracket. All 14 top seeds advanced into the semi-finals while 12 of the 14 number two seeds advanced. The only exceptions were at 113 pounds, where Manny Dovshek of Bentworth beat PJ Smith of Burgettstown 11-2 and at 182 pounds, where Joe Bastaroli of South Fayette beat Tyler McConaha of Elizabeth Forward 4-3. Of the 42 section champions, 31 still remain in the winners bracket with an opportunity to win a gold medal.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 02/22/2016

We all knew it was coming. A major change to the WPIAL high school sports landscape based on the PIAA's decision to increase from four to six classifications in football, basketball and baseball, plus the increase in other sports such as soccer and lacrosse. The WPIAL Board of Control approved the various steering committee's re-alignment suggestions starting with the 2016-2017 school year. WPIAL champion Belle Vernon (20-2) finished in third place at the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships by winning the consolation final over Nazareth, 30-28, on Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey, PA.Bethlehem Catholic & Brookville Win 2016 PIAA Team Wrestling Titles
For only the second time in the last nine years and the first time since 2010, a WPIAL team did not bring state gold back from Hershey in the team wrestling playoffs. Bethlehem Catholic won the AAA title after winning four straight AA state championships from 2011 to 2014. District 9 champion Brookville is celebrating their second PIAA state title and first since 1999. The best finish for a WPIAL team was Belle Vernon as the Leopards finished in third place by winning the Class AAA Consolations. All three WPIAL Class AAA teams remain alive at the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships, but only one will bring home the hardware from Hershey's GIANT Center. Belle Vernon lost Friday evening in the semifinals in a much anticipated showdown with the state's top-ranked team. As a result, the Leopards drop to the consolation bracket and await the winner of a match between the WPIAL's other two representatives, Canon-McMillan (12-3) and Kiski Area (22-2), who will square off on Saturday morning in a third round consolation match at 9:00am .PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day One Recap

WPIAL qualifiers Belle Vernon, Canon McMillan and Kiski Area all won opening round matches at the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships on Thursday evening at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The trio now advances to the:quarterfinal round scheduled to start at 2:00 pm on Friday.

The Franklin Regional wrestling program has been not only one of the best in the WPIAL, but in the entire nation over the past several seasons. While the Panthers have produced an array of Division I talent, Nico Megaludis stands atop the list of Franklin Regional grapplers. As a freshman competing in the 103-pound weight class in 2008, the Murrysville native posted a record of 37-1, and finished in third place in the state tournament. The mat dynasty run has reached double digits. The Burrell Buccaneers continued their record run of WPIAL Class AA Team Wrestling championships with victories over South Fayette in the Semifinals and Freedom in the Finals Saturday at Chartiers-Houston High School to claim a tenth consecutive crown and 12th in school history. Meanwhile in the Class AAA Semifinals and Finals at Penn Hills High School, top-seed Belle Vernon swept past North Allegheny and Canon-McMillan for the schools first ever team wrestling title. After coming up short a year ago from being WPIAL Champions, Belle Vernon had no trouble taking care of business Saturday at Penn Hills. The day started with Belle Vernon defeating North Allegheny in the semi finals 54-12. In that match, the Leopards picked up six falls and three major decisions to cruise to a victory. Belle Vernon's opponent in the finals was Canon McMillan, who avenged a 15 point December defeat to knock off Kiski Area in the other semi final, 27-25. An upset at 182, where James Zeremenko pinned Tyler Worthing, gave Canon McMillan a 12 point swing from the December match that Kiski Area was not able to overcome.Burrell Caps Off Golden Decade With 10th Straight AA Wrestling Title
Burrell (11-5) survived a nail-biter in the semifinals, but then rolled to a 48-17 victory in the championship match over Freedom to win the 2016 WPIAL Class AA team wrestling championship on Saturday afternoon at Chartiers-Houston High School. The Buccaneers have now won ten straight District 7 team championships and it was the twelfth title for the program overall.
