Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for New Castle on 5/2/14
May 2, 2014
In maybe the best comeback of the season, the New Castle Red Hurricanes rallied from a 6-0 fourth inning deficit to defeat the Hopewell Vikings and move ever so closer to a fourth straight berth in the WPIAL Softball Playoffs. The Red Hurricanes posted three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then sent twelve hitters to the plate, scoring eight runs on the way to the win. New Castle is now 7-3 overall and 6-3 in Section 1-AAA, having won six straight section games.

Scholastic Notebook – 05/02/2014
There are multi-sport athletes in the WPIAL who compete in more highly-visible sports than North Hills’ Noah Bostick. But as far as the number of sports and excelling in them, Bostick has few peers. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say Bostick is most one of the best all-around athletes in the WPIAL. He is a young man for all seasons – and then some. You don’t see many three-sport athletes these days at large schools. But Bostick is more than a three-sport athlete. He actually competes in four sports, and does well in all of them.

Hometown Softball Program Salute – SOUTH SIDE BEAVER RAMS
April 25, 2014
South Side returns eight starters from last year’s playoff team. The Lady Rams are currently sitting in third place (7-2, 8-2), with five section games left. Two of them versus the co-leaders Shenango and Neshannock (May 1, 2). The Lady Rams are looking to get back to the post season for the sixth straight season. With only two weeks left, South Side will be looking to Senior Sarah Androlia and Sophomore Slugger Connor McGaffic to keep the Lady Rams on pace for the playoff berth. This year’s version of the Lady Rams are young, with only three seniors on the roster, Androlia, Amber Marburger and Cassidy Smith. Theresa Waxler is relying on the underclassman to step up the rest of the way. Even though they are young, they have playoff experience.

The Elizabeth Forward Warriors suffered a 6-4 defeat in a Class AAA Section 3 matchup versus the Yough Cougars Thursday afternoon at William Penn Field thanks to a late 7th inning 3 run rally put together by the Cougars.

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Elizabeth Forward on 4/21/14
April 23, 2014
Elizabeth Forward (9-3, 6-1) started early, rattling off seven first inning runs and running away with an 11-1 mercy rule win over South Park (2-8, 1-7) on Monday afternoon at William Penn Elementary Field. The Warriors had their first six batters reach base and score, as the Eagles would be plagued by a pair of errors in the opening frame. Freshman Jessica Cartia's two-RBI double, Freshman Maddie Porter's two-RBI single and McKenna Kern's RBI single highlighted the bottom half of the first, which saw eleven Elizabeth Forward batters.

Scholastic Notebook – 04/20/2014
If you look at the three sports of football, basketball and baseball, Baldwin has been more like Baldloss the past few years. But finally, the baseball team is putting the win back in Baldwin. Things have been absolutely perfect so far this spring for the Baldwin baseball team. The Highlanders have a perfect 7-0 record after a 13-3 victory over Gateway on Saturday. This winning is new for the three teams of football, basketball and baseball at Baldwin. There hasn’t been a winning season in those three major sports since the basketball team went 14-8 in the 2009-10 season and the baseball team went 12-6 in the 2010 season. The football team hasn’t had a winning season since 2003.

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Chartiers-Houston on 4/17/14

Dominant in every facet of the game, host Chartiers-Houston cruised to a 14-0 victory against Washington at Allison Park Elementary School on Thursday. The Lady Bucs scored multiple runs in each of the four innings they batted, and pitcher Kassie Kesneck tossed a complete-game shutout. With the triumph, Chartiers-Houston remains third in Class AA Section 2 with a 5-3 mark (7-5 overall). Washington falls to 1-6 in section play (1-7 overall).

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for West Mifflin on 4/16/14
West Mifflin senior Paige Flore pitched a complete game four-hitter allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking just two as West Mifflin defeated Belle Vernon 7-1 in AAA Section three action Wednesday afternoon on the MSA Sports Network. Flore was untouchable at times, changing speeds and hitting her spots and keeping the Leopards off balance all afternoon.

Hometown Softball Program Salute – NEW CASTLE RED HURRICANE
April 16, 2014
Even coming off a first round playoff loss in 2013, the future is bright for the New Castle Red Hurricanes softball team. With the loss of just one senior and after starting three freshman, Coach Leah Ann Williams was looking ahead to 2014. New Castle plays in Section 1-AAA, an ultra-competitive section. Ambridge won the section championship last year on the way to a WPIAL title game appearance and a long run in the PIAA playoffs. New Castle handed Ambridge their only loss in section play. Blackhawk tied New Castle for second place, the Red Hurricanes knocked off Ellwood City 1-0 in the section finale. Central Valley and Hopewell round out the section.

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for New Castle on 4/10/14

The George Washington Intermediate School field played more like Wrigley Field on Thursday as the Wolverines defeated the Red Hurricanes. The teams combined for three homeruns 19 runs scored and 22 hits in a two-plus hour game that saw both squads have to make pitching changes. Ellwood City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as senior Shea Barrett homered to dead center field. New Castle returned the favor as senior Shannon Dudich hit a line-drive homer to left center field to tie the game. Ellwood City took back the lead in the second on back to back doubles by Lauren Stiles and Mallory Swogger.

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for West Mifflin on 4/10/14
Shannon Davis' RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning delivered West Mifflin (9-2, 4-2) a dramatic 8-7 win over rival Thomas Jefferson (7-3, 3-3) on Thursday evening at West Mifflin High School. The game, one of the wildest and longest in the 2014 WPIAL season, took turn after turn, with five lead changes and five ties. West Mifflin was forced to overcome seven errors and three wild pitches and rallied from two different two-run deficits in extra innings to pull out the late win. Senior Paige Flore pitched all 14 innings for the Titans, throwing 154 of her 199 pitches for strikes. The Slippery Rock recruit rung up 16 Jaguars batters on strikeouts and walked only two. Only one of the seven runs she allowed was earned.

Hometown Softball Program Salute – WEST MIFFLIN TITANS
April 10, 2014
2013 was a break through year for the West Mifflin Titan softball program.  The Titans compiled a 17-6 record, won a share of the section title, and were WPIAL Semi-finalists.  The playoffs birth was the first in 15 years and the section title was the first in 18 years.   Although hit hard by the graduation for 4, four year starters, the Titans return a solid core for 2014.  Leading the team will be two four year starters- Senior Pitcher Paige Flore and Senior Pitcher/first baseman Crystal Cook.  Along with Flore and Cook are the following returning starters: Catcher- Alyssa Cairns LF- Shannon Davis CF- Chelsea Hess 2B- Lauren Ackerman

Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Brentwood on 4/9/14
The Brentwood Lady Spartans defeated East Allegheny Wednesday 8-1 in WPIAL Section 4 AA action Wednesday afternoon at Brentwood High School. The win moved the Lady Spartans to 2-1 in the section and 3-2 overall while EA dropped to 1-3 in the section and overall.  Brentwood managed to score 8 runs on only 3 hits off of EA pitcher Stephanie Fritzious, capitalizing on four Wildcats errors and aggressive base running to manufacture runs.
