Hometown Softball Recap – West Mifflin Titans – 04/01/2016

West Mifflin banged out 11 hits and had 19 base runners but struggled to get hits when they needed them the most, in dropping their first AAA Section 3 game of the season to the much improved Ringgold Rams Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School. Titans senior, Amber Cook, led the way with three hits, including an RBI double that knocked home Tiana Sekowski in the 3rd inning which, at the time, cut the Ram lead to 3-2. Sekowski reached base in four of her five plate appearances and had two stolen bases. But, Ringgold would score two more runs in the top of the 4th inning to extend the lead to 5-2. The Titans would threaten but not score in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings as they stranded two base runners in each inning.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 03/28/2016

With such a mild winter coming to an end and warmer than normal temperatures in the area for most of March, coaches, players and fans are ready to hit the diamond for the start of a new softball season. However before we look ahead, we take time to look back at the 2015 season. We all knew it was coming. A major change to the WPIAL high school sports landscape based on the PIAA's decision to increase from four to six classifications in basketball and softball, plus the increase in other sports such as soccer, volleyball and lacrosse. The WPIAL Board of Control approved the various steering committee's re-alignment suggestions starting with the 2016-2017 school year. This alignment also will be for the 2017-2018 school year. While WPIAL admiinistrators, coaches, players and fans will have to wait until Monday, February 15th for the new WPIAL Six Classification alignments to be announced, the structure of the sections and the playoff format were released on Wednesday. The new alignment list has been released by the PIAA for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 spring sports seasons. With the expanded classifications, there are still a lot of questions to be answered by WPIAL school officials and the schools themselves before anything in finalized and conferences are set. Schools must make a decision by mid-December if they want to remain in their designated classification OR decide to move up in class. Are you ready for six classifications in Pennsylvania high school football? And boys basketball? And girls basketball? And baseball? And softball? Six classifications in all of those sports will be a reality in the 2016-17 school year. That was the gigantic news that came out of a PIAA board of directors meeting Wednes day in Mechanicsburg. Heading into the meeting, the main topic on the agenda was supposed to be a final vote on the expansion of classifications in football from four to six. The PIAA had already passed that in two other votes, and needed only to pass one more vote before going into effect for the 2016-17 season. That proposal easily passed by a 26-4 vote. 2015 MSA Sports Diamond Dolls

Take a glance at the players on the MSA Diamond Dolls team this year and it’s obvious that youth is served. The Diamond Dolls is MSA’s girls softball all-star team. It is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. This year’s team includes six non-seniors. The player of the year is a freshman and the team also has a sophomore and four juniors. Four of the players on the team won WPIAL titles. Here is a look at the Diamond Dolls all-star team as well as the Player of the Year. PLAYER OF THE YEAR: BAILEY PARSHALL, BELLE VERNON Pitcher Fresh. Yes, a ninth-grader has won the Player of the Year award.

The drought has now hit two years for the WPIAL in state softball. After having no teams qualify for the PIAA championship a year ago, both Trinity and Deer Lakes made the trek Friday to Penn State, only to come up empty on gold as the Hillers and Lancers settled for silver. Trinity was blanked by Bethlehem Catholic in the AAA finals while Deer Lakes lost a shootout to Holy Redeemer in the AA title game. Here are ALL the results from the 2015 PIAA Softball Playoffs.
