FINALLY! High school football camps throughout Pennsylvania open for business on Monday. That means teams have less than a week of practice before they hit the field for the first of two scrimmages in preparation for the season lid-lifter on Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd. Scrimmage number one will take place this Saturday, August 20th on fields around Western Pennsylvania.

It was rare air in the 2009 District 8 football finals as Pittsburgh City League powers Perry and Brashear were spectators for a game they were often participants in. However all was back to normal in the 2010 City League title game as the Commodores and Bulls battled for gold at Cupples Stadium on the South Side.

South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. That nightmare finish in 2009 though led to a golden dream season in 2010.

However the new kids on the block in Class AAA went for perfection in a different way that has never been done before. One Season - One Championship. After the 2009 school year, Center High School and Monaca High School merged to form a new school district.

CTK 2011 – 2010 WPIAL Class AAAA Football Flashback
It had been two decades since one of the WPIAL Class AAAA's top football programs had won a district championship. However that drought ended when North Allegheny captured gold by beating the 2009 champion Woodland Hills Wolverines in the WPIAL finals at Heinz Field. Three weeks later, the Tigers captured a second PIAA football crown to go along with the 1990 state championship they won.

There are 126 schools in the WPIAL that field a high school football team. While a majority still begin at 7:30pm, 38 of them now kickoff their home games at 7:00pm, including the enire Class AAA Keystone Conference. Pittsburgh Central Catholic wide receiver and defensive back Anthony Nixon has decided to play his college ball at Maryland while Shaler catcher Lauren Hackett will stay local and play at Robert Morris.
