It is hard to figure out what happened in the First Round in the Battle to the Bluff. Four days of surprises concluded Wednesday night with the 2nd-seed in the Boys AAAA Playoffs being ousted, putting an end to a crazy opening round across the board. The WPIAL Board of Control Tuesday approved the new basketball alignments for both the boys and girls for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 high school winter sports seasons. Here is the new section break down in each classification for both the boys and the girls.WPIAL schools moving up in class for the next two seasons are New Castle boys, Hampton boys, Trinity boys, Freeport boys, Ellwood City boys, Steel Valley boys, Elderton boys, Bentworth boys, Laurel Highlands girls, Chartiers Valley girls, Southmoreland girls, Brownsville girls, Waynesburg girls, Keystone Oaks girls, Quaker Valley girls, Riverview girls, Chartiers-Houston girls and Fort Cherry girls.

Through two rounds of the girls version of the Battle to the Bluff, the three of the four defending champions (Blackhawk, Seton-LaSalle and North Catholic) and all four #1 and #2 seeds are still alive. Double-digit seeds Upper St. Clair, Steel Valley, Keystone Oaks and Riverview have decided to crash the Semi's party, while AAAA Section 4 and AA Section 5 have been dominant.
