The Canon-Mac Big Macs won their second WPIAL boys soccer championship at Highmark Stadium at Station Square when in the 8th minute of overtime Brandon Byer beat Fox Chapel keeper Jacob Dunn for a “Golden Goal”, and a 2-1 Canon-MacMillan win.
Fox Chapel had the better of play for most of the night out shooting and out-chancing the Big Macs.
Fox Chapel took the lead in the 11th minutes when Kota Furuhata headed a Nathan Wecht corner behind Big Mac keeper Christian Snatchko.
It looked for a very long time as if that goal might stand up. But in the 79th minute of play Byer was fouled in the box by a Fox Chapel defender and Nick Sodini was awarded a penalty kick. Sodini was true low and to the far post scoring his 31st goal of the year and sending the title tilt to overtime. Canon-Mac riding the wave of momentum from the equalizer had the better of play in the extra period and notched the game winner off the foot of Byer who took a perfect pass from Luke Maher in stride coming from the right wing and went low to the far post for the game-winner.
After the win Byer told the MSA Sports Network the feeling was very difficult to describe. “It;s just amazing, it’s the kind of thing you dream of your whole life and now it’s happening and it’s just surreal, I can’t believe it.”
The Big Macs improve to 18-3-0 and advance to the state tournament. Fox Chapel falls to 17-2-1, but the Foxes also move on to the state tournament which begins on Tuesday.
