A state title can shine a spotlight on any community, large or small. It can even come with national recognition.
The Canon-McMillan baseball team was lauded nationally Thursday for winning the PIAA Class 6A title as coach Tim Bruzdewicz was named the USA Today All-Pennsylvania Coach of the Year.
Bruzdewicz guided Canon-McMillan to a 21-5 record.
The Big Macs defeated Bensalem, 10-3, on June 15 for their second state baseball title. They became just the fourth team — the first in 22 years — to win WPIAL and PIAA titles in the state’s largest classification.
More WPIAL honors went to Vincentian senior Kyler Fedko, who has named USA Today’s Pennsylvania Player of the Year.
A Connecticut recruit, Fedko hit .661 with eight home runs, 41 RBIs and 46 runs to led the Royals to WPIAL and PIAA Class A championships.
In addition, three other WPIAL players made USA Today’s all-state team. Sophomore outfielder Austin Hendrick of West Allegheny was a first-team selection, while second-teamers included senior pitcher Zach Rohaley of Canon-McMillan, and senior infielder Michael Turconi of Blackhawk.
