Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 11/14/13

At the Beaver County Ice Arena in a Hometown Sports Broadcast the Morgantown Mohawks defeat the home standing Blackhawk Cougars by a 6-3 score. Both teams came into the contest undefeated, Morgantown at 3-0, and the Cougars at 2-0. Both teams were scoring goals at a record pace. The Mohawks had 23 in 3 games or 7.6 per game, and Blackhawk had 20 in just their two games and had a 10 goals per game average. This game saw 9 goals, some great goaltending, a lot of great offense and pressure but not a lot of defense.
Blackhawk came on strong early and put pressure on Mohawk goalie Jacob Hough but he was up to the challenge making 4 terrific saves to keep the Cougars off the board. Morgantown would score first at 1:53 on a goal by Ben Taylor to make it 1-0 Morgantown. The Cougars would tie it up less than two minutes later at 3:34 as Senior Nathan Lundy scored off a rebound in front. Blackhawk would go up 2-1 as Kyle Schafefer would score on a breakaway at 15:17. His goal was a shorthanded effort as the Cougars were killing a penalty. They almost killed the penalty but the Mohawks would get a power play goal as Cullen Gookin tied it at 2-2 at 16:49 of the first period. First period shots on goal were Blackhawk 11, and Morgantown 13.
Into the second period and Morgantowns speed started to show. They were all over the Cougars and put pressure on in droves.Blackhawk held tough for a while until Zac Lewis would score on a partial break away at 6:56 to give the Mohawks a 3-2 lead. Just 3 minutes later Blackhawk would tie it at 3-3 as Schaefer would get his 2nd goal of the game at 10:00. Morgantown would make it 4-3 at 12:48 of the period as Kienan Batttin would score shorthanded. The Cougars were on the power play and the defense had pinched in. Battin took advantage of the defensive breakdown and put the Mohawks up to a 1 goal lead. This goal was a killer for the Cougars as they had fought back to tie after Morgantown had taken the lead with inspired play. Blackhawk was struggling defensively and the fact they tied it up gave them hope. The shorthanded goal seemed to inspire the Mohawks into the third period. Second period shots were Blackhawk 15, Morgantown 14.
The third period was all Morgantown. Blackhawk would get a few scoring attempts but Hough came up big with the saves and his team mates would put the game away with two late goals, both on Cougar breakdowns. Lewis would get his second of the game at 11:41 to make it 5-3, then Nathaniel Wheeler would put it away with a goal at 12>:38 tio make it 6-3. Third period shots on goal were Morgantown 9 and Blackhawk 6. Totals were Morgantown 36, and Blackhawk 32.
The Mount Lebanon Ice Arena play of the game was the shorthanded goal by Kienan Battin in the second period to give the Mohawks the 4-3 lead. From that point Morgantown was the better team, and it spurred them on to a good third period.
The MSA three stars of the game were: Third Star was Morgantowns Zac Lewis with two goals, the second star was Blackhawks Kyle Schaefer with 2 goals, and the number one star and player of the game was Jacob Hough with 29 saves on 32 shots. He made the difference early in the game with 4 big saves, and shut the Cougars down any time they mounted an attack.
Morgantown improves to 4-0 on the year and Blackhawk falls to 2-1.
