Bishop Canevin recently hired Randy Cosgrove as athletic director, reuniting the former Ambridge administrator with high school sports.

“I really wanted to get back into it,” said Cosgrove, who was Ambridge's athletic director for 14 years before leaving the district in 2012. “I love the athletic arena and (Canevin) was a good situation. The people are so friendly and there are a lot of good programs here, both academically and athletically.”

Cosgrove started Monday at the Catholic school in East Carnegie. The Plum graduate, who's a member of his alma mater's athletics hall of fame, lives in Coraopolis. He once worked as a teacher at Plum, became assistant athletic director at Robert Morris and later served as athletic director at North Hills.

He also spent 15 years as the Steelers' public address announcer.

At Bishop Canevin, Cosgrove replaces Dale Checketts.

The latest PIAA enrollment figures list Canevin with 96 boys and 81 girls in grades 9-11, the figures used to determine classifications. The school is small but has found its share of WPIAL and PIAA success.

The girls basketball team won WPIAL titles in three of the past five seasons, twice reached the PIAA finals and won a state championship in 2013.

The baseball team won WPIAL titles in 1993 and 2000, while softball won in 1990 and 1999. The football team also won a WPIAL title in 1990 but has struggled in recent seasons with roster numbers.

“I understand there are a few programs that need a little push,” Cosgrove said. “But what ain't broke, don't fix it. And whatever needs fixed, go fix it.”
