Beaver’s List drives in 6 in WPIAL 1st-round rout of Derry

Beaver freshman Payton List turned in quite of a performance in her first WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
List clubbed a pair of two-run home runs and finished with six RBIs to help the No. 5 Bobcats to an 18-3, three inning victory against No. 12 Derry in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday at Fox Chapel.
Beaver (13-4) will now face No. 4 South Park (13-4) on Monday at a site and time to be determined.
The Bobcats hit four home runs off two Derry pitchers and now have 18 this season. List now has six dingers.
“We have a good hitting team,” Beaver coach Amy Haggart said. “We have girls who can produce. I told the girls never to underestimate your opponent. They didn’t.”
List got Beaver a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning with a home run.
Then the Bobcats, who pounded out 14 hits, batted around the next two innings.
Lexi Dawson added a three-run blast during an eight-run second inning, and Anna Blum and List each added two-run shots during an eight-run third inning. List’s bases-loaded single ended the game in the third inning.
“This hurts now, but I want the girls to learn from this experience,” Derry coach Patrick Meloy said. “The girls now see what it takes to be a good program. It’s a process.
“They’re all back next season. So we’ll work hard to get back here. We’re a young group that I hope grows from this.”
Derry (4-11) fell behind 10-0 after two innings, but put together a little rally in the top of the third inning as Carissa Bateman doubled home two runs and Kam Kelly singled home the other.
Gianna Copelli also doubled for Derry. Susie Hill and List each had three hits for Beaver.
