Baldwin athletic director Vince Sortino found his new girls basketball coach just across the hallway in Kyle DeGregorio, who’s a guidance counselor in the district.

Sortino had to search slightly farther for the boys coach. The school board Monday hired former Westinghouse coach Eugene Wilson to coach the boys team and DeGregorio to coach the girls.

“I’m extremely happy with them,” Sortino said. “They’re two great guys. Both high-energy.”

DeGregorio worked the past five seasons as the boys coach at Belle Vernon and went 62-52, with a 35-14 record the past two seasons. He returns to a district where he served nine seasons as the boys basketball coach from 2002-11. He went 112-99 with four WPIAL playoff appearances before Baldwin replaced him.

“It’s great to have him back in our program,” Sortino said. “Now he doesn’t have to get in his car and drive to Belle Vernon. That had to be a tough ride for him six days a week.”

DeGregorio also has coached at Ephrata, Manheim Central and York Vo-Tech in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Wilson coached three seasons at Wilkinsburg with two winning records and spent the past two seasons at Westinghouse, where he went 31-17. Westinghouse reached the PIAA second round this year.

“In his two coaching stints, he’s turned programs around,” Sortino said. “He’s done a great job.”
