Avonworth transfer Kyros Thorpe can complete the regular season but the football standout remains ineligible for the playoffs.
The WPIAL held a hearing Thursday at the league office in Green Tree and voted to deny a request from Avonworth to grant Thorpe postseason eligibility. Thorpe didn’t meet the waiver criteria established in the PIAA rules, WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley said.
The WPIAL also denied postseason waiver requests from Carmichaels transfers Sydney Kuis (volleyball) and Jackson Machesky (basketball, baseball), who attended separate hearings Thursday. Kuis transferred from Mapletown. Machesky transferred from West Greene.
All three were impacted by a PIAA rule enacted last summer that makes transfers after the start of 10th grade postseason ineligible for one year.
The schools can appeal to the PIAA.
Thorpe has made an immediate impact at Avonworth since transferring home from Central Catholic. In two games with Avonworth, he has seven catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns.
The wide receiver and defensive back scored twice in last Friday’s 47-14 victory over Valley.
