Basketball coach George Yokitis, the state's Class A coach of the year in 2011, was hired Friday to lead Aquinas Academy's boys team.
Yokitis previously coached at Montour and Vincentian Academy, where his Royals teams went 157-51 in eight seasons, winning two WPIAL titles. He coached Montour the past two seasons. The Spartans went 23-21 but missed the playoffs each year.
“The appointment of George Yokitis to lead our young men on the basketball court shows our strong commitment to giving our students the best teachers, not just in the classroom, but in their athletic pursuits as well,” said Leslie Mitros, who directs the private school in Hampton, in a statement. “George's outstanding record of achievement in leading student-athletes to success will further our school's mission of developing students as leaders on and off the court.”
Aquinas Academy does not play boys basketball in the WPIAL but hopes to join for the 2019-20 season. The school's girls basketball team joined the WPIAL this past season.
