Ambridge hires Don Phillips as football coach

Coaching veteran Don Phillips will return to the sidelines this fall after two seasons away.
Ambridge hired the 68-year-old coach Thursday to take over a Bridgers program that has struggled for wins in recent seasons. Phillips last coached Ellwood City from 2008-16 after stints at West Allegheny, Center, Monaca and Rochester.
His career record is 162-133-3.
“(Ambridge administrators) liked his energy and passion for the student athletes,” Ambridge athletic director Brian Miller said. “He has passion for not just the athletic part of (coaching), but also the education side of it. … He’s looking at the football field as a classroom as well.”
Ambridge went 1-28 overall in the past three seasons under coach Terry George. The Bridgers were outscored 344-30 this past season when they finished 1-9 overall, 0-7 in the Class 4A Northwest Eight.
