Alle-Kiski Valley Athletes of the Week: Plum’s Bailey Raposa, Highlands’ Cris White

Bailey Raposa

Class: Senior
Sport: Volleyball
Report card: A team captain and four-year starter at libero, Raposa was named Defensive Specialist MVP at last weekend's Deer Lakes tournament, where Plum won the championship with a 2-0 win over host Deer Lakes. As a junior, Raposa was named third team all-Section 4-4A. She played in every set (over 60) and led the Lady Mustangs in service attempts, digs, digs-per set while also finishing with a 95-percent serve percentage including 25 aces. Raposa also excels in the classroom, holding down a 4.5 GPA.
How long have you been playing volleyball?
This is my sixth year. I started the summer before seventh grade.
What is your favorite thing about playing volleyball?
My teammates and my coaches. Volleyball is so mental it has carried me through different aspects in my life mentally.
What are your personal and team goals this season?
Personally, I want to make first-team all-section, challenge my teammates and I want every person on my team to feel like they can do their best.
What section matches are you most looking forward to this year?
The two hardest teams to beat are Armstrong and Oakland Catholic.
What's her name and who is older?
Her name is Brooke. I'm older by a minute and I hold that minute against her like you wouldn't believe.
What three words best describe you?
Hardworking. Passionate. Optimistic.
Who should play you in a Hollywood movie?
Sandra Bullock and that's because I think we have similar personalities because she seems strong and independent.
What's your most memorable moment from this past summer?
Playing summer league volleyball with my Plum team.
What's your favorite subject at school?
Science.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I just got accepted to Robert Morris and I want to study nursing and I want to go into neonatal care because I really love babies.
What is something interesting about you that nobody knows?
I'm very artistic and I'm a perfectionist.
Cris White
School: Highlands
Class: Senior
Sport: Soccer
Report card: A four-year starter for the Rams, White scored two goals from his center-midfielder position in Highlands' 2-1 win over Section 1-3A foe Armstrong on Tuesday. White scored a career-high five goals and had four assists as a junior and is poised to set career-bests in his final season. He also plays club soccer for Stars Crew Soccer, where he plays center and outside midfield.
How long have you been playing soccer?
I've played soccer since I was 4 or 5 years old.
What is your favorite thing about playing soccer?
The competitiveness. I also love the competitiveness of going up against kids who are bigger than me, strong than me and I just love going out and trying my best. It gives you that opportunity to improve.
What are your personal and team goals this season?
It's one goal and I've been saying it since the summer: it is to just make the playoffs. The last time Highlands has made the playoffs was in 2004.
What section matches are you looking forward to this year?
I'm very excited for section matches against Greensburg Salem and Knoch. I think we can take it to Knoch this year. Every game I look forward to.
What three people would you like to have dinner with?
Pele, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela.
What three words best describe you?
Hardworking. Team player. Motivated.
Who should play you in a Hollywood movie?
Morgan Freeman. You can't go wrong. He's funny and talented.
What's your most memorable moment from this past summer?
Spending time with my girlfriend. The few dates we got to go on is really memorable. It might sound cheesy but she's done a lot for me.
What's your favorite subject at school?
Math.
What are your plans for after high school?
Go to college. I know I want to go to college for something in business. I've narrowed it down to colleges that have offers for academics and soccer. One that I'm really considering is Hiram College in Ohio.
What is something interesting about you that nobody knows?
Before my mom and dad scheduled the surgery, I used to have a cleft palate.
