WPIAL softball playoffs
Class 3A
Quarterfinals
11-Freeport (11-6) vs. 4-Mohawk (15-5)
6 p.m. Thursday at Seneca Valley
Winner plays: Winner of 1-Avonworth (12-3)/9-Yough (8-4) in semifinals (date/site/time TBD)
Players to watch: Addy Caruso, Freeport; Addy Moskal, Mohawk
Extra bases: Freeport made the most of its return to the WPIAL playoffs after a one-year hiatus with Tuesday’s upset victory over No. 5 Southmoreland. Caruso got the Yellowjackets on the board with a two-run homer in the first inning. Jayme Radvan added an RBI single in the sixth as part of a six-hit effort. Senior Akron commit Sydney Selker struck out 11, walked six and scattered five hits. Her second strikeout of the game in the third inning was the 500th for her career. Freeport also reached the WPIAL quarterfinals in 2022 before falling to No. 1 Beaver and standout pitcher Payton List. … Mohawk advanced past Waynesburg, 8-5, on Tuesday. Moska and Mylie Pistorius doubled and drove in a run each for the Warriors, who won their second straight after three losses in a row late in the regular season. The Section 2 champion also got a single and a double from Lydia Cole. The Warriors hope for a better quarterfinal fate this year after falling to Burrell in last year’s round of eight. Mohawk seeks a run to what would be a first WPIAL title. … The winner of Thursday’s matchup also clinches a berth to the PIAA tournament as the top four teams in Class 3A advance.
