WPIAL Boys Lacrosse
Class AA Third-Place Consolation
12-Freeport (9-8) vs. 3-Quaker Valley (10-4)
4 p.m. Friday at Robert Morris
Winner plays: District 3 champion Hershey on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined
Coaches: Dave Riley, Freeport; Chip Hansen, Quaker Valley
Players to watch: Sean Fennell, Sr., attack, Freeport; David Kraus, Sr., attack, Quaker Valley.
Shots on goal: The WPIAL advances three teams from AA to the PIAA playoffs for the first time. Freeport will attempt to qualify for states for the first time in the program’s five-year history. A loss to top-seeded Mars on Monday in the semifinals dropped the Yellowjackets to the consolation game. Freeport advanced to its first WPIAL semifinal game with upsets over No. 5 Chartiers Valley in overtime in the first round and No. 4 Moon by a 7-6 score in the semifinals. Fennell, a Marietta commit, scored a team-best four goals, including the gwinner with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left, against the Tigers. Freeport is 3-3 in its young playoff history. Quaker Valley is averaging 11.6 points per game this season. The No. 3 Quakers had a bye into the quarterfinals and topped No. 6 North Hills 9-3 before falling to No. 2 Hampton 9-6 in the semifinals. QV finished as the WPIAL AA runner-up in 2017 and qualified for states. It lost to District 3 runner-up Hershey in the first round. Kraus is a leading scorer for the Quakers, and the Allegheny College commit surpassed the 200-point career milestone earlier this month during a three-game stretch in which he tallied 11 goals and added nine assists.
