The Moon Tigers won their second WPIAL girls soccer championship Friday night with a hard-fought 1-0 over crosstown rival and section foe Montour. The Tigers beat the Spartans for the third time this season, Montour was undefeated in 2016 were it not for the Moon Tigers.

It was a dramatically physical contest but never chippy at Highmark Stadium at Station Square, bodies were flying from the start and afterwards Emma Thomas. the second leading scorer on the season for the Tigers said she expected nothing less. “They are our rivals and this being WPIALs we had to play more intensely and they played more intensely as well, so I gotta give respect to them.”

The Tigers got the game-winner in the 75th minute when junior forward Delaney Snyder took a feed on the left wing and streaked down the line cutting into the box and left-footing a pass to Emily Orr who was coming into the box from the right wing. Orr made it count with a laser beam of a shot by Montour senior keeper Maura Hickey.

The play went exactly according to plan said Snyder, the leading scorer in the regular season for the Tigers with 31 goals. Snyder  told MSA Sports she knew Orr would be in the right place, “Everytime I know Emily is there, she has my back and I have hers and I knew that goal was going to be scored.”

The Tigers win their second title with the first coming in 2004, and in doing so improved their record to 21-1 on the 2016 campaign.

Montour falls 16-3-3 on the season, both teams continue into the PIAA tournament next week.
