Nearing the conclusion of a successful boys golf season that included a fifth-place finish at the WPIAL Class AAA team championships, Pine-Richland’s Jack Wymard was the last Rams golfer standing, representing his program at the PIAA individual championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort Oct. 23-24.

The senior represented well, helping to bring a close to the Pine-Richland golf season by collecting an 18th-place finish. Wymard put together a first round score of 76, and shot 81 in round 2 to earn a top-20 finish.

“It was awesome just to make it all the way to states; that’s what I was most proud about,” Wymard said.

“I knew it’d be really tough to make it to that stage and to do well there, but I was just excited about reaching that level and making it that far.”

In order to qualify for states, Wymard first had to finish in the top 14 at the WPIAL championship, where he placed 12th.

From there, the Rams senior went on to the PIAA West Regional, where he shot a 74 and finished in fourth place. Teammate and fellow WPIAL qualifier Cade Zolkos closed the same event in a tie for 11th, just missing the cut for the state finals by two strokes.

After running the gauntlet of stiff competition to reach the state individual championship, Wymard said he may have not been at his sharpest in his final showing of the season. There were ups and downs to his game. Nonetheless, he says he knows he has plenty to be proud of.

“I just mainly wanted to go out and hit fairways and make some putts. The first round, I just wasn’t making too many putts so it was tough to put together my best score. In the second round, I didn’t strike the ball too well, so that held me back,” Wymard said.

“My chipping game probably saved me so many strokes on the greens. That’s usually one of the stronger points of my game. Overall, I could have done a little better, but I had a goal to make it to this point and I achieved it. It was cool to have this type of season.”
