Sewickley Academy’s Hajdukiewicz among goal and point leaders in PIHL Varsity A

Matthew Hajdukiewicz leads Sewickley Academy ice hockey with 11 goals and 14 points through five games, and he is second in all of Varsity A in goals and tied for second in points.

He has at least one goal in every game and tallied seven points (four goals, three assists) in a 10-3 win over Freeport on Oct. 18.

Nicholas Frantz from Meadville leads Varsity A in both categories with 14 goals and 20 points.

Sewickley Academy (2-3) returns to action Monday at 7:15 p.m. against Fox Chapel.

Joshua Bemis leads Quaker Valley (1-4) with six goals and has a team-best seven points over the team’s first five contests in Varsity AA. He has at least one goal over the past four games including a pair in a 6-2 win over Armstrong and a 6-3 loss to Shaler.

Bemis ranks tied for seventh in Varsity AA in goals.

QV takes on Plum on Monday at 9 p.m. at Pittsburgh Ice Arena in Lower Burrell.

Runners finalizing preparation for PIAA championships

The PIAA cross country championships in Hershey is two days away, and runners from Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy are set to compete against the best in the state.

The six races begin with the Class A girls Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Quaker Valley junior Annie Wicker and teammate Anna Cohen, a freshman, will run in the girls Class AA race at 10:15. Wicker captured the WPIAL championship last week at Cal U (Pa.), while Cohen placed ninth.

The Class A boys will run at 11:45 a.m., and Sewickley Academy senior Henry Meakem, 21 ^st at WPIALs, will be in the mix.

The same is true for Quaker Valley junior Daniel Ford who will compete in the Class AA boys race at 12:30 p.m. Ford took third overall at WPIALs.

The AAA girls and boys races will be at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.

PIAA tournament also awaits QV boys soccer

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team will play for a WPIAL championship Saturday. Win or lose, the Quakers then will turn their attention to the PIAA playoffs and a defense of their 2017 state championship.

QV (18-3) will either play the District 6 champion or the top team from the District 5-8 region Tuesday evening at a site and time to be determined.

Last year, as the WPIAL runner-up, QV rolled past District 9 champion St. Mary’s 8-0, edged WPIAL No. 3 Beaver 2-1 and shut out District 3 runner up Oley Valley 2-0 before topping District 3 champion Lancaster Mennonite 3-2 to claim the state title.

The Quakers take on Shady Side Academy on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
