Reagan Frederick

School: Kiski Area

Class: Junior

Sport: Soccer

Report card: Frederick caught fire at the right time for No. 7 Kiski Area (14-4, 11-3). A three-year starter, the forward scored twice in the Cavaliers’ 4-0 win over No. 10 Plum in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA girls playoffs. Frederick leads Kiski in goals (21), including nine goals over the Cavaliers’ last four games, and has eight assists.

How long have you been playing soccer?

Since I was 8.

How was it to win a first-round game against Plum?

The feeling was incredible because we’re really aiming to move on to the second round. It’s just amazing.

How does it feel to contribute the way you did?

It feels great. I feel very honored to be a part of this group because of all the good players.

How do you explain your outburst of scoring?

Having a good connection with my teammates.

What do you know about the Cavaliers’ quarterfinal opponent in No. 2 Oakland Catholic?

I know that they are going to expect to win and be very competitive. I feel like if we play as well as we did against Plum, we should beat them.

What do the Cavaliers need to do to get the win?

A lot of teamwork. That seems to be what really helped us against Plum. We just need to work as a team.

Can you describe how competitive Section 1-AAA was this season?

I think it was definitely the hardest that we ever played, especially against Mars and Hampton.

What did this team learn from last year’s postseason run?

I think we did learn a lot about teamwork and working better together on and off the field.

What three people would you like to have dinner with?

Blake Lively, Ed Sheeran and Noah Centineo.

What three words best describe you?

Competitive. Outgoing. Passionate.

Why do you wear the No. 15?

My number was originally 16, but for high school one of the older girls had it. Megan Rapinoe has it, too.

What do you enjoy most about the fall/autumn months?

Going to scare houses and pumpkin patches with my friends.

What’s your favorite food that includes pumpkin?

Pumpkin drop cookies with the orange icing.

What’s your favorite subject at school?

Chemistry.

Something interesting about you that that nobody knows?

When I was 10, I got head-butted by a dog and had to get stitches on my eyelid. It was my aunt’s dog.

Nick Caro

School: Deer Lakes

Class: Senior

Sport: Soccer

Report card: A four-year starter for Class AA No. 2 seed Deer Lakes (16-0-1), Caro has four goals and four assists from his center-back position this season. He’s part of a stingy back line that has allowed 13 goals through 17 games, including eight shoutouts. Caro is also the placekicker and punter on the Deer Lakes football team, he has hit 13 of 14 extra-point attempts and he kicked a career-long 41-yard field goal against rival Freeport this season.

When did you start playing soccer?

I was about 4 years old. This will be my 14th year playing.

How relieved were you to notch that 5-0 first-round win over No. 15 Beth-Center on Monday?

It was nice to get that out of the way, but there’s still pressure because we want to win a championship.

How fun was it to host Deer Lakes’ first playoff game in school history?

It was great. That atmosphere was awesome, and having the home crowd there and having our friends and students there was really cool.

Is this a championship team?

Definitely. There’s no reason that we shouldn’t be able to compete in the championship game this year.

How good is this team playing at the moment?

At the moment, we’re playing the best we’ve played all season and that gives us lot of confidence in the playoffs.

The girls soccer team is a No. 3 seed. What is up with soccer at Deer lakes?

There must be something in the water this year. Our soccer teams are doing amazing.

What is the strength of this year’s team?

I don’t know if I could pick out one strength because all around we’re pretty solid. But if I had to say, our center midfield is pretty phenomenal.

What three people would you like to have dinner with?

Chris Boswell, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho Gaúcho (Brazilian soccer player).

What three words best describe you?

Hardworking. Athletic. Determined.

Why do you wear the No. 18?

It started out with my brother (Alex). He wore No. 18 when he was a senior, and when he left I took and it just kind of stuck.

What’s your favorite food that includes pumpkin?

Pumpkin roll. I love that stuff.

Something interesting about you that that nobody knows?

I always have to be doing something. I hate sitting around and doing nothing. I have to stay active.
