WPIAL boys and girls soccer playoff pairings released

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team is the No. 1 seed for the WPIAL Class AA tournament, and it will take on Freeport in the first round Monday at 8 p.m. at Chuck Knox Stadium.

The Quakers, 15-3 overall, went undefeated in Section 4 play (12-0) and finished the regular season on a 15-game winning streak.

Sewickley Academy is the No. 4 seed in the Class A bracket, and it will face No. 5 Monessen on Monday at 6:15 p.m. at West Allegheny High School.

The Panthers, the Section 1 champions, suffered a 1-0 nonsection loss to Quaker Valley on Tuesday, but they ended the regular season with wins in five of their final seven games.

Sewickley is 12-4 overall, and all four losses came by a one-goal margin.

On the girls side, Quaker Valley is the No. 11 seed in the AA bracket, and it will face Brownsville in the first round Saturday at 1 p.m. at Belle Vernon High School.

The Quakers edged Beaver Area by two points for the fourth and final playoff berth from Section 1.

They went 4-4 over their final eight games of the regular season and enter the playoffs 8-8 overall.

Sewickley Academy cross country teams to run at TSTCA meet

The Sewickley Academy boys and girls cross country teams will get a good look at the new WPIAL course as they run at Thursday’s Tri-State Track Coaches Association Championships at Roadman Park at Cal U (Pa.).

More than 50 teams are scheduled to compete. The girls AAA race kicks everything off at 1 p.m. There also will be AA and A races.

The WPIAL will return to Roadman Park on Oct. 25 for the WPIAL championships.

Sewickley Academy’s first taste of running among a large field of teams was at Red, White & Blue on Sept. 8 at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. Nella Tsudis led all Panthers runners that day with a 26 th -place finish (22:39.64) in the A/AA girls race.

Panthers advance to WPIAL final

The Sewickley Academy girls tennis team will play for a WPIAL championship.

The top-seeded Panthers face No. 2 Knoch in the AA final on Thursday at 3 p.m. at North Allegheny High School.

They breezed past Southmoreland in the first round, No. 9 Ellis in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Greensburg Salem in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Sewickley Academy hopes to win its second straight WPIAL title and sixth overall since 2008.
