Notes plus a few updates from the Brentwood athletic scene:

• The boys soccer team has savored an awesome season in 2018.

The Spartans sizzled down the season’s home stretch, winning five consecutive games by a 29-1 overall margin.

Brentwood socked Chartiers-Houston, 1-0; Monessen; 7-1; Beth-Center, 4-0; Bentworth, 8-0; and California, 9-0; to improve to 7-1-2 in section play and 8-1-2 overall.

Freshman goalkeeper Zach Dirling posted five shutouts in his team’s 11 contests, and allowed only one goal in five others.

The team’s starting defensive corps consists of seniors Simon Accamando and Suren Poudyel, sophomore Dom Dudiak and freshman Marc Accamando.

“We are playing very well,” coach Ron DiNardo said. “Our ball control is good, our speed is great, and our goalie and defense are playing fabulous soccer. I told the kids to take it one game at a time.”

Goal-scorers against California were junior striker Shashak Gurung, with two goals; sophomore forwards Ben Betz and Heran Pradhan, senior midfielders Biren Biswa and Ramesh Bista, sophomores Dan Steingraber and Mario Richards, and Poudyel, who netted one apiece.

• The girls volleyball team edged Fort Cherry, 3-2, at home Sept. 13 in a key section match.

Almost a month later (on Oct. 9), the Rangers returned the favor, slipping past Brentwood by the identical 3-2 score.

“Yes, we are pretty evenly matched I would say,” coach Kayla Hubsch said. “Once again, we took the first two games but couldn’t pull off the third and fourth to take us to another Game 5. That game was back and forth until the end when Fort Cherry had a couple hard-hitting plays to take the win. Both teams fought hard on defense and were strong at the net.

“It is always a tough game on the road against a quality team like Fort Cherry. I think this game was a good learning lesson for us to be able to prepare for playoffs.”

• Eddie Gomez, a speedy 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior wide receiver/defensive back, reeled in a 58-yard touchdown pass Oct. 5 during his team’s 24-21 conference loss to Serra Catholic.

On the season, Gomez has 17 receptions for 259 yards (15.2 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. He leads the Spartans in scoring with five touchdowns and 15 extra-point kicks, good for 45 points.

• After seven games, Brentwood’s football team was 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Class 2A Three Rivers Conference.

Also after seven games, junior QB John Milcic had thrown for 777 yards and seven touchdowns.

• Brentwood seniors Abby Wolf and Natalie Murrio recently were lauded as players of the week by the WPIAL Volleyball Coaches Association.

Wolf is a setter; Murrio is an outside hitter/defensive specialist.
