Sewickley Academy senior Tatum McKelvey hopes to capture WPIAL gold for the second year in a row as she and 12 other golfers take to Sewickley’s Diamond Run Golf Club on Wednesday for the Class AA girls individual championships.
She is not alone as junior teammate Zoe Luther also is in the field.
McKelvey tees off at 9:58 a.m. with Greensburg Central Catholic senior Abby Zambruno and North Catholic junior Maddie Smithco.
Luther is in the final threesome and will begin at 10:22.
The top nine who shoot 100 or less advance to the PIAA Western Regional qualifier on Monday at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville.
The top 11 from the regional will compete at the PIAA championships Oct. 22 and 23 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
McKelvey edged out Central Valley senior Kiaria Porter by a shot at last year’s WPIAL tournament. Porter won the title by two shots in 2016, and McKelvey tied for fourth.
The top eight finishers moved on from WPIALs last year, and Luther missed out by one stroke.
Quakers seek return to win column
The Quaker Valley girls soccer team is hoping to bounce back from its 3-2 loss to North Catholic in Section 1-AA play Monday with a section match Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Steel Valley.
The setback to the Trojans halted a mini two-game win streak in section action. The Quakers had just scored a 1-0 win at North Catholic on Saturday.
Quaker Valley still is entrenched in the Section 1 playoff race. Everyone is chasing section leader Hopewell (7-0-1).
North Catholic is 6-2, and the Quakers are 5-3.
Nipping at Quaker Valley’s heels is Avonworth (4-3-1). The Antelopes lost a close 2-1 match to Hopewell last week, and they topped Beaver Area 2-1 on Monday.
Panthers girls soccer hopes to add to victory
Sewickley Academy broke out offensively Monday against Neshannock, and the Panthers (2-8-1, 2-6-1) hope the 8-2 victory sparks a late-season run in Section 3-A.
Sewickley hosts Mohawk (4-3-1) on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at Nichols Field.
Mohawk leads the Panthers by six points for the fourth and final playoff spot from the section. Each team earns three points for a win and one for a tie.
OLSH (5-3) and South Side (3-5), however, sit in Sewickley’s way in the standings.
Freedom (8-0) leads the section, followed by Riverside (4-1-3) and Quigley Catholic (5-3-1).
