There were questions of whether they would finish Friday night’s Moon and Chartiers Valley game after weather suspended play in the third quarter or come back Saturday to finish.
The game was ruled final and Moon defeated Chartiers Valley, 26-0, to grab its first Class 5A Allegheny Eight Conference win this season.
Moon’s defense forced two turnovers, accrued five sacks and held the Colts to just 65 total yards of offense in route to the victory. This coming from a defense that going into the game allowed nearly 30 points per game, including 90 points combined the last two weeks.
Chartiers Valley (3-2, 0-2) had no answer for Moon’s defense, as quarterback Griffin Beattie went just 1 of 10 for minus-8 yards and an interception, while also being able to rush for just 73 yards as a team.
The Tigers (2-3, 1-1) scored twice in the first quarter on a touchdown run by Brady Sunday from 6 yards out and a touchdown reception by Christian Tanner from 38 yards out to make it 14-0.
The Tigers added another score before the half and led 20-0 on another Tanner touchdown reception, this time a 2-yard touchdown catch.
Both bands took the field at halftime and right after the Chartiers Valley band stepped off the field, the heavy rain hit.
The second half started roughly 10 minutes after the original 20-minute break due to the strong winds and heavy rain and Moon capitalized, driving 72 yards in the downpour, punctuated by a Zack Jadlocki 6-yard touchdown run to make it 26-0.
Chartiers Valley sustained a solid drive on the ensuing kickoff, driving down to the Moon 29-yard line, but after losing 10 yards and facing a third and 20, the first strike of lightning hit and the game was called after a 40-minute delay.
