Away from the elements, Tuesday is another busy day of girls volleyball around the WPIAL, including three matches with first place in their respective sections at stake.

In Section 4-3A, defending champion Knoch will visit Ambridge. The Knights are off to a 4-0 section start while the Bridgers are right behind at 3-0.

A pair of 3-0 teams atop Section 2-2A collide when North Catholic travels to Hopewell.

Then there is the fight for first in Section 4-A where four teams are separated by a half game. Riverview, Leechburg and Trinity Christian are all 3-1 early on while Greensburg Central Catholic is 2-1. On Tuesday, two of those teams go head-to-head when Leechburg hosts Riverview.

Searching for another win or just a win

Two matches stand out on a busy night of WPIAL boys section soccer.

One is a clash between two teams that are perfect in section play.

First place is at stake in Section 4-2A when Quaker Valley takes on North Catholic. Both teams are 4-0 atop the section, with the Quakers 4-3 overall and the Trojans a perfect 5-0. They have outscored opponents 35-3.

On the other end of the spectrum are Washington at Yough in a Section 2-2A clash.

The Cougars and Little Prexies are both in search of their first wins as they bring a combined 0-9 record into the match.

In fact, both teams a year ago were a combined 2-30 with their only victories coming against each other.

Yough won at Washington, 4-1, while the Little Prexies picked up their victory on Cougar Mountain, 2-1.

Postseason love

The first district championships of the 2018 school year will take place on Friday, but on Tuesday the WPIAL will release the brackets for the two-day girls singles tennis championships that begin on Thursday.

The field of players was determined last week when the WPIAL held tournaments for each of the four sections in both Class AAA and Class AA.

The top four finishers in those sectionals qualified for the WPIAL championships Thursday and Friday.

The WPIAL steering committee will seed all 16 players in each class to determine the brackets that will be released Tuesday afternoon.
