Carter Breen
School: Norwin
Sport: Soccer
Class: Senior
Claim to fame: Breen recorded two hat tricks last week to lead Norwin (4-1, 2-0) to a 10-1 win over Penn Hills on Sept. 4 and a 4-3 win over Plum on Sept. 6. Breen, who entered the season with 32 career goals, added a goal in the Knights’ 5-0 win over Ringgold on Sept. 8.
“It’s been a team effort. I wouldn’t have done it without everyone on the team. We have a strong section so we need to win every game,” Breen said.
What are your college plans for next year?
I’m looking and I’m taking visits pretty soon. I’m looking to go somewhere who has a great team, atmosphere and coach as well as great academics. I would like to major in business.
What did the team learn from the opening 2-1 loss to Seneca Valley?
We used it as motivation to do better every single game.
What does the team need to do to get over the hump in the WPIAL playoffs?
We need to keep working hard and finish our chances.
What is your favorite thing about being the kicker on the football team?
I love the atmosphere on Friday nights. The pregame, during the game and postgame are always fun.
What was the best part of your summer vacation?
I went on a Mission Trip to Puerto Rico. We helped them recover from last year’s hurricane.
Sydney Lindeman
School: Franklin Regional
Sport: Soccer
Class: Freshman
Claim to fame: Lindeman recorded her first career hat trick to lead Franklin Regional (2-2, 1-2) to an 8-0 win over Armstrong in Section 1-3A action Sept. 8. In her first career game, Lindeman tallied a goal and two assists for the Panthers in a 4-0 win over Elizabeth Forward in nonsection action Sept. 1.
“When I stepped on the field, I was nervous since I was starting as a freshman. When I got my second goal, I got a little more confident and started to dribble the ball a lot better. I just want to help my team to be more successful,” Lindeman said.
What does it mean to you to have some early success as a freshman?
I’ve been playing soccer for a long time. As I play, I get more confident. I want to get better and better and winning more games.
What has been the general message to the team during the early part of the season?
We want to make it further in the playoffs and possibly win our section.
How would you describe your style of play on the field?
I can move the ball fast. I like to use my foot skills. I like to see the play develop and see what plays I can make to get to get the ball to the final third of the field. As a center midfielder, you have to have good touches and know how the defenders are working you. We have three center midfielders that need to work together so the defenders can’t steal the ball.
What is your favorite aspect of soccer?
I really enjoy it. I enjoy playing and scoring. I enjoy crushing the defense of the other team. I like to strive to get better each and every day.
What is your earliest memory of playing soccer?
It would have to be when in the MASA league at 4 years old. I played goalie for a little bit. My team and I would have oranges at half and snacks after the game.
