As impressive as his many roles are, it’s not exactly about how much Brando Ciccarelli can do for the Greensburg Central Catholic football team.

It’s more like, what can’t he do?

Ciccarelli is a multi-faceted senior leader for the Centurions, who are off to a 2-0 start as they head to No. 3. Clairton (1-0) on Friday night.

“He can do everything,” GCC second-year coach Aaron Smetanka said.

Like what, coach?

Smetanka takes a deep breath.

“Fullback, tight end, running back, backup quarterback, inside linebacker, and kicker and punter,” the coach said. “He is very valuable for us … he can even start on the line.”

Ciccarelli is a second-year starter for GCC, which has wins over Ohio’s Tuscarawas Central Catholic (41-7) and WPIAL Class A Eastern Conference foe Riverview (35-0). The 5-foot-9, 215-pound Ciccarelli has rushed for 187 yards and scored three touchdowns; has an interception and four tackles on defense; has five touchbacks on kickoffs; and also is averaging 40.2 yards per punt.

His offensive role has been elevated because of some injuries, while the kicking and punting have been beneficial after the graduation of standout Ethan Slike (Akron).

“He has really taken on a leadership role and has led us by example,” Smetanka said. “The other guys look up to him; he’s a great kid.”

Ciccarelli took a time out for this week’s player Q&A.

GCC is off to a strong start. How far can the momentum take the team?

Our goal is to make the playoffs, and we think we can do that. We feel like we can compete with Clairton, Jeannette and Imani (Christian).

Since you wear so many hats, has there been a game where you’ve played every down?

Yes. Fort Cherry last year. Never came out. I just want to help the team win, whether it’s on offense, defense or special teams.

Cool first name. Do you know who Marlon Brando is?

Yes. I have read about him. My great-grandfather from Italy was actually named Brando so that’s where I got the name.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in North Huntingdon and came to GCC in eighth grade. I wanted to play soccer, and I did in ninth grade. Then in 10th grade I was watching a (soccer) scrimmage and I realized I wanted to play football again.

Has the team taken to coach Smetanka’s system?

We have some new kids who are still learning it, but I think the kids who played last year understand it.

What other sports do you play?

Lacrosse. Football helps me with lacrosse. And lacrosse helps keep me in shape for football.

Who has the best nickname on the team?

Has to be ‘Hogie’ or ‘Biscuit.’ (Offensive linemen) Matt Hogan or Andrew Mazik.

Favorite movie?

“Remember the Titans.”

What’s the deal with schools getting out early and practices being moved due to the heat?

It’s crazy. It’s hot but coach is always big on hydrating. You just have to manage it.

Favorite pro athlete?

Ryan Shazier.

Any pets at home?

Two boxers, “Carmen” and “Jozi.”

Best place to eat in Greensburg?

Edo Hibachi is good, but we like New City Buffet. Twelve bucks and you can just eat and eat all day.

You helped design the new black helmets?

Yes, we all talked about ideas. We liked the black matte. We love them. The all-black (uniforms) is a great look.

Who wins, Pitt or Penn State?

I like Ohio State so I want Pitt to win.
