Ellis School field hockey player Tegan Poerio was selected to play in the 2018 AAU Junior Olympic Games, which begin next month at the University of Iowa.
Poerio, a rising sophomore, was the only WPIAL player selected. USA Field Hockey invited players after the 2018 Citi National Futures Championship. The AAU Junior Olympic Games feature more than 14,000 athletes across 20 sports, and USA Field Hockey picked eight U-16 teams for the games.
Last season Poerio, a midfielder, earned All-WPIAL honors after scoring a school-record 32 goals and helping Ellis win its fourth consecutive WPIAL Class A championship. Max Field Hockey ranked her on its list of the top 101 freshman field hockey players in the country.
The AAU Junior Olympic Games run from July 29-Aug. 2.
