WPIAL baseball playoffs roundup for May 21: Greensburg Salem upsets No. 1 Blackhawk

The Blackhawk baseball team averaged 9.2 runs en route to earning the No. 1 seed in the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.

On Monday, Matt Wicker and Andrew Rosenberg made sure the Cougars wouldn't get near that mark.

The pair combined on a four-hitter, and Jonathan Borbonus doubled in Dajauhn Hertzog in top of ninth to lead No. 8 Greensburg Salem to a 1-0 victory over Blackhawk (16-2) in a quarterfinal at Seneca Valley.

Wicker threw 6 13 innings with six strikeouts, and Rosenberg earned the win after 2 23 innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Greensburg Salem (13-5) will play No. 4 Ringgold (15-3) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Burkett Complex in Kennedy.

Hopewell 8, Knoch 6 — Josh Miklos and Tyler Sabo each went 3 for 4 to help No. 10 Hopewell upset No. 2 Knoch (14-4) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals at Hampton. The Vikings will play No. 3 South Fayette in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Burkett.

Ringgold 5, New Castle 4 — Bob Boyer drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to give No. 4 Ringgold (15-3) a walk-off win in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals at Washington & Jefferson. Koby Bubash was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Boyer had a home run for the Rams.

South Fayette 14, West Mifflin 4 (6 inn.) — Joey Alcorn and Richie Dell each knocked in four runs, including a home run for Dell, as No. 3 South Fayette (15-5) won a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal at Peterswood Park. Tyler Bedillion had three doubles for the Lions. Nick Ackerman homered for No. 6 West Mifflin (15-6).

Class 3A

Avonworth 8, Shady Side Academy 6 — Ryan Felter, Jax Miller and Time Stewart all had two RBIs as No. 2 Avonworth (15-4) won a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal at Burkett. Jacob Gustic and Miller each had three hits for the Lopes, who will play No. 3 South Side in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Peterswood Park.

Riverside 3, Steel Valley 1 — Austin Dambach hit an RBI triple to help No. 1 Riverside (16-1) claim a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal win at Burkett. Nick Harhai allowed four hits and struck out seven in 5 23 innings to earn the win. The Panthers will play No. 4 Brownsville in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson.

Brownsville 6, Valley 5 — No. 4 Brownsville rallied from a three-run deficit after the top of the first inning, eliminating No. 5 Valley for the second consecutive season with a victory in a Class 3A baseball quarterfinal at Washington & Jefferson.

Valley (11-7) stranded seven baserunners in the loss. The Vikings led 3-0 after the top of the first inning, but Brownsville (13-2) scored four in the bottom of the frame and put up two runs in the fourth inning. The Vikings responded with two runs on the fifth, but that was as close as the Vikings got.

Dylan Browsky got the win for Brownsville. Josh Davison and Dylan Brosky both doubled and drove in two runs.

Vikings pitcher Cayden Quinn suffered his first loss of the season, giving up seven hits and striking out three batters. Andrew Serakowski singled, double and knocked in a run for Valley.

Class 2A

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 8, Carlynton 4 — No. 2 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic improved to 16-5 with a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal win at Seneca Valley. The Trojans will play No. 3 Neshannock at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Burkett.

Neshannock 6, Brentwood 2 — Chris Bouye and Dante Delillo each had three hits as No. 3 Neshannock (18-3) won a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal at Chippewa Park.

Serra Catholic 5, Laurel 0 — Mark Black was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Nate Piontka threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as No. 1 Serra Catholic (20-1) rolled to a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal win.

Shenango 15, Carmichaels 7 — Shane Cato was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Jake Merkel had a double and three RBIs as No. 5 Shenango (14-7) won a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal at Washington & Jefferson. Shenango will play No. 1 Serra Catholic in the semifinals.

Class A

Vincentian Academy 7, Cornell 0 — Stephen Turzai threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts, and Kyler was 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI as No. 1 Vincentian (13-4) won a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal at Shaler. Mark Yakim and Aidan Thomson each had two hits and two RBIs for the Royals, who will play No. 5 Jeannette in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fox Chapel.

Union 7, Monessen 6 — Bryce Smith hit a walk-off single in seventh as No. 2 Union (13-3) won a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal. Tote Rhome and Vin Rhome each had two RBIs for No. 7 Greyhounds (11-7).
