High school roundup for May 16, 2018: Cornell wins 1st playoff game in program history

The Cornell baseball team made history Wednesday, and Hayden Hoffman played a key role.
The junior pitcher struck out 16 batters as the Raiders defeated West Greene, 5-0, in a WPIAL Class A first-round game at Peterswood Park to claim the first playoff victory in program history.
Tony Piccolo paced the offense with a double and two RBIs for No. 8 Cornell (10-4), which will play No. 1 Vincentian Academy (12-4) in the quarterfinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.
Class 3A
Shady Side Academy 6, Waynesburg 5 (6 inn.) — In a game shortened to six innings because of rain, No. 10 Shady Side Academy (7-9) won a WPIAL Class 3A first-round game at Peterswood Park.
Jackson Clark had two RBIs, and John Salvitti knocked in one for the Indians.
No. 7 Wayneburg (9-5) had scored the final five runs of the game. Kyle Blasco had two RBIs in the loss.
Class 2A
Shenango 2, Bishop Canevin 1 — No. 5 Shenango (13-7) edged No. 12 Bishop Canevin (8-8) in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round game at Chippewa Park. Shenango will play No. 4 Carmichaels (11-5) in the quarterfinals.
Softball
Class 5A
Connellsville 7, Hampton 4 — Kylee Yothers homered and had three RBIs, and Abbi King had a two-run homer as No. 5 Connellsville (12-6) won a WPIAL Class 5A first-round game at Plum.
Hannah Bradfield and Natalie Klaas each had three hits for No. 12 Hampton (8-9).
Connellsville will play No. 4 Franklin Regional in the quarterfinals.
Thomas Jefferson 3, Moon 2 — The No. 11 Jaguars (11-5) scored three times with two outs in the seventh inning to earn a WPIAL Class 5A first-round win at West Allegheny.
Hayleigh Karcher plated two runs on an infield single, and Bella Bucy singled in another run.
Trinity 12, Gateway 2 — No. 8 Trinity improved to 13-7 with a WPIAL Class 5A first-round win at Baldwin. The Hillers will play No. 1 West Allegheny (17-1) in the quarterfinals.
Class 2A
Chartiers-Houston 15, Northgate 0 (3 inn.) — Kaci Alderson homered twice, and Kasey Scears was 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (15-2) to a WPIAL Class 2A first-round victory at West Allegheny. Kaitlyn Dittrich threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
Neshannock 16, Shady Side Academy 0 — The No. 9 Lancers improved to 11-7 with a WPIAL Class 2A win at Hampton. They will play No. 1 Frazier (13-5) in the quarterfinals.
Serra Catholic 5, Shenango 2 — Lexi Fite had two RBIs, and Rebekah Pais scattered eight hits with four strikeouts, as No. 7 Serra Catholic (11-4) won a WPIAL Class 2A first-round game at Hampton.
