Will Bednar wasn't unhittable Tuesday afternoon, but he came pretty close.

The junior Ohio State recruit tossed a six-hit complete game with 16 strikeouts to lead No. 5 Mars to a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Trinity in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A baseball playoffs at Seneca Valley.

Jack Anderson and Frank Craska knocked in runs for the Planets (13-5), who will play No. 4 Laurel Highlands in the quarterfinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Kyle Steele took the loss and knocked in a run for Trinity (5-10).

Laurel Highlands 6, Fox Chapel 5 — Tan Erminio drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Alec McLay to lead No. 4 Laurel Highlands (16-3) to a walk-off win over No. 13 Fox Chapel in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. Ian Edenfield doubled and singled and Mason McManus doubled, singled and drove in one run. Greg Lancaster picked up the win for Laurel Highlands. Matt Jerpe tripled and T.J. Johnston drove in two runs for Fox Chapel (9-11).

Class 6A

Butler 4, Upper St. Clair 1 — Connor Ollio threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and also hit a solo home run as No. 8 Butler (12-6) won a WPIAL Class 6A first-round game at North Allegheny. Butler will play No. 1 Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Canon-McMillan 2, Norwin 0 — Zach Rohaley struck out six batters in 5 ²⁄₃ innings to lead No. 4 Canon-McMillan (14-5) to a WPIAL Class 6A first-round win over No. 13 Norwin (7-8) at Boyce Mayview Park. Norwin had 10 hits, including three by Ronnie Kachman and two from Jayden Walker and Owen Sabol.

Greydon Piechnick and Nick Serafino knocked in runs for the Big Macs, who will play Plum in the quarterfinals.

Pine-Richland 5, Peters Township 1 — Matt Wood was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs as No. 6 Pine-Richland (14-6) won a WPIAL Class 6A first-round game at Boyce Mayview Park. Matt Schietroma tossed a four-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the win. The Rams will play No. 3 Hempfield in the quarterfinals.

Class 4A

Hopewell 3, Belle Vernon 1 — Jake McGovern was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and Mitch Heranic homered as No. 10 Hopewell (12-9) won a WPIAL Class 4A first-round game at Hempfield. Josh Hoffman had two hits for No. 7 Belle Vernon (11-6).

Hopewell, which scored twice in the top of the seventh, will play No. 2 Knoch (14-3) in the quarterfinals.

Class 3A

Steel Valley 15, Charleroi 0 (3 inn.) — Andre Good had three RBIs, and Alex Ligeros, Mason Haley and Brady Miller all had two as No. 8 Steel Valley (11-7) won a WPIAL Class 3A first-round game at Boyce Mayview Park.

Class 2A

Brentwood 8, Chartiers-Houston 2 — Kevin Brown had three RBIs, and Austin Klein added one as No. 11 Brentwood (11-6) won a WPIAL Class 2A first-round game at Burkett Field. The Spartans will play No. 3 Neshannock in the quarterfinals.

Carlynton 14, California 8 — Evan Staker, Mark Phillips and winning pitcher Zack Oddi all had three hits as No. 7 Carlynton (13-3) won a late-night game at Burkett Park in the Class 2A first round. Carlynton, which scored four runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth, will play No. 2 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Laurel 7, Fort Cherry 5 — At Chippewa Park, Dom Wade was 3 for 4 with three RBIs to guide No. 9 Laurel (12-5) to a WPIAL Class 2A first-round win. Laurel will play No. 1 Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Class A

Eden Christian 12, Rochester 4 — Dylan Kingan had three RBIs, and Jared Morris knocked in two runs as No. 6 Eden Christian (8-7) won a WPIAL Class A first-round game at Shaler. Luke Vittone was 3 for 3, and Dylan Kingan allowed four hits and had seven strikeouts in the win.

Jeannette 2, Leechburg 0 — Tre Cunningham tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as defending WPIAL champion Jeannette opened the postseason with a win over No. 12 Leechburg (4-11) in a Class A first-round game at Fox Chapel.

Tyler Elliott and Seth Howard each had two hits, and Howard and Cunningham had RBIs for the No. 5 Jayhawks (12-3), who will play No. 4 Quigley Catholic (13-1) in the quarterfinals.

Monessen 2, Western Beaver 0 — Tyler Swann provided the needed runs with a two-run single in the sixth inning.

Cory Fleming made sure they stood by tossing a complete-game five-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

Combined, they helped the Monessen baseball team win a WPIAL playoff game for the first time in program history, as the No. 7 Greyhounds blanked No. 10 Western Beaver in a WPIAL Class A first-round game at Burkett Park.

Monessen (11-6) advanced to play No. 2 Union (12-3) in the quarterfinals Monday.

District 6

Penn Cambria 4, Ligonier Valley 1 — Mason Ronan had two RBIs as Penn Cambria (11-6) defeated Ligonier Valley (11-7) in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs.

Softball

Class 6A

Canon-McMillan 15, Fox Chapel 12 — The No. 9 Foxes rallied from a five-run deficit and grabbed the lead, but a seven-run fifth helped lift the No. 8 Big Macs to a Class 6A first-round victory at Peters Township. Fox Chapel (6-9) collected 10 hits. Eva Speacht doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Bri O'Malley homered and collected three RBIs. Claire Katz and Krystyna Burdelski each tallied a double and an RBI for the Foxes, and Emma Humes recorded three hits. Olivia Ulam and Erica Haught each had four hits to lead Canon-McMillan's 16-hit attack. The Big Macs will face No. 1 Hempfield in the quarterfinals.

Mt. Lebanon 6, Pine-Richland 2 — Emily Amoto, Paige Sneddon and Megan Dietrick all homered as No. 10 Mt. Lebanon (8-8) won a WPIAL Class 6A first-round game at Sewickley Academy. Catie Rogan tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

North Allegheny 6, Bethel Park 5 — Chloe Szczepaniak had two doubles and three RBIs, and winning pitcher Ashley Adams also knocked in two runs as No. 4 North Allegheny (14-7) won a WPIAL Class 6A first-round game at Peterswood Park.

Norwin 8, North Hills 2 — Junior Alex Brentzel's grand slam in the third inning propelled a seven-run Knights' outburst in a WPIAL Class 6A first-round win at Plum. No. 5 Norwin (11-6) also got three RBIs from Leah Yoder. A seventh-inning home run by Leslie Rozanski was a bright spot for the No. 12 Indians (5-10). Norwin will play North Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

Peters Township 16, Seneca Valley 13 — Madison Morgan was 4 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Jill Yeates also homered as No. 11 Peters Township (10-8) won a WPIAL Class 6A first-round game at West Allegheny.

Karli Hacker was 4 for 5 with two doubles and a home run, and Maura Pasquale also homered for No. 6 Seneca Valley (12-6).

Class 4A

Ambridge 6, Derry 2 — No. 5 Ambridge (9-5) advanced to the quarterfinals with a Class 4A first-round win over No. 12 Derry (5-10). The Bridgers will play Belle Vernon. Haylee Holman was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Belle Vernon 12, Uniontown 0 (5 inn.) — Bailey Parshall threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts as No. 4 Belle Vernon (18-3) won a WPIAL Class 4A first-round game at Latrobe. Kourtney Gavatorta had three hits and three RBIs, and Natalie French and Alex Sokol each had two RBIs for the Leopards.

Elizabeth Forward 15, New Castle 0 — Kailey Larcinese threw a no-hitter to guide No. 6 Elizabeth Forward (17-3) to a WPIAL Class 4A first-round win at West Allegheny.

Kaitlin Fournier was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Taylor Ludwick had a double and three RBIs for the Warriors.

Indiana 13, West Mifflin 11 — Alley Bush was 3 for 3 with two home runs and six RBIs as No. 7 Indiana (13-5) won a WPIAL Class 4A first-round game at Plum. Audrey Barbus added two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Isabella Farmer had three hits, including a homer, for No. 10 West Mifflin (11-10).

Knoch 12, Blackhawk 0 — No. 9 Knoch (13-5) rolled into the quarterfinals, where it will meet No. 1 Mt. Pleasant.

Class 3A

Ellwood City 4, South Allegheny 1 — Madi Krugh threw a three-hitter with two strikeouts to help No. 9 Ellwood City (8-5) score a WPIAL Class 3A first-round win at Sewickley Academy.

Steel Valley 9, Deer Lakes 6 — The No. 11 Lancers (5-8) led 3-0 after their first at-bat, but No. 6 Steel Valley (12-6) rallied for five in the bottom of the first and went on to post a Class 3A first-round victory. Deer Lakes trailed 9-3 before scoring twice in the fifth and once in the seventh to set the final. The Lancers held a 9-8 advantage in hits. Katelynn Blair doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs to lead Deer Lakes. Makayla Blair also singled twice and added a double.

Waynesburg 7, Freedom 3 — Bailee Shimek had three RBIs and Rachel Elsenheimer added two as No. 7 Waynesburg (10-7) won a WPIAL Class 3A first-round game at Baldwin. Waynesburg will play No. 2 Freeport in the quarterfinals.

Boys lacrosse

Freeport 22, Seton LaSalle 4 — The Freeport boys lacrosse team made program history Tuesday at home against Seton LaSalle.

The Yellowjackets, the No. 8 seed in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs, earned their first-ever postseason victory.

Freeport (11-5) and will play at No. 1 Mars on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Braith Kiser, Brennon Riley and Garret Schaffhauser each scored five goals.
