Herald roundup: Shady Side Academy doubles team wins section, WPIAL titles

The Shady Side Academy tandem of Naman Dua and Colin Gramley captured the WPIAL Class AAA doubles championship Friday after defeating Hampton's Ben Ringelsen and Ted Donegan, 6-4, 6-3.

The Indians duo advanced to the PIAA tournament, set for May 25-26 in Hershey.

Sewickley Academy's Will Nocito and Dylan Parla defeated Panthers teammates Cole Luther and Saarang Mulukutla, 6-2, 6-0, to capture the Class AA crown.

At the Section 3-AAA doubles tournament earlier last week, Dua and Gramley defeatd Allderdice's Marcus Mitchell and David Missry, 6-4, 6-4, to claim the title.

In the all-Fox Chapel consolation match, Karsten Lagerquist and Jared Nord defeated Jay Kashyap and Kurran Singh, 6-7 (12-10), 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Softball

Shady Side Academy softball pounded out a 22-11 win over Springdale on May 3. Kate Hart belted a pair of homers, and Chayla Edwards also hit one. Hart went 5 for 5 for the day with a pair of doubles as every SSA player in the lineup had at least one hit.

Edwards, a junior who will play hockey at Wisconsin, had never played softball before this season. It was her second homer of the year. After her estimated 250-foot blast, she was intentionally walked in her next at-bat.

The Indians (7-3) earned the No. 8 seed in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs and will play No. 9 Neshannock (10-7) in the first round Tuesday at Hampton.

Track and field

The Fox Chapel track team was one of more than 60 schools competing at the Baldwin Invitational on May 4. Members of the girls team that claimed medals were: Caelan Miller, who was sixth in the mile; Brooke Krally, who was fourth in the 1,600; Grace Sisson, who took fourth in the 3,200; Sarena Seeger, who was sixth in the 3,200; and Kate Carnevale, who was fifth in the 200.

From the boys team, Jon Folkerts was seventh in the 1,600 and Christian Fitch took fourth in the 3,200.

Boys lacrosse

Fox Chapel boys lacrosse hosted Shady Side Academy on May 7 and came away with a 9-7 win. With the win, the Foxes (12-4) ended up in a first-place tie with SSA and North Allegheny in Section 3-3A. Reed Seybolt had three goals and forced two turnovers while Zack Yonas had a goal and three assists. Devon Root scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while George Thompson and Bradley Root contributed a goal each. Graham Childs had a goal and forced three turnovers, Kenyon Weiss forced five turnovers and John Bozzone forced two. Goalie Jackson Boychuck made 11 saves.

“The Shady Side win was a really big game for us because it propelled us to grab a share of first-place in our section,” FC coach Kevin Devinney said. “SSA is a big rivalry for us and they have a really good team this year, so we had to dig deep to get the victory. Overall, we had a really nice season, and I'm really proud of every one of our guys.

“We worked hard all fall and winter and it paid dividends this season. We accomplished our goal of competing for section and are excited about the playoffs. Our next goal is to win a playoff game, so we've begun preparations for the tournament. We're looking forward to our draw and hope to continue our momentum forward.”

Fox Chapel (12-4) earned the No. 7 seed and will host Butler (10-6) in the first round Monday at 7 p.m.

No. 6 Shady Side Academy (8-4) will play at Canon-McMillan (10-7) in the first round at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Girls lacrosse

The Shady Side Academy and Fox Chapel girls lacrosse teams each advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.

The No. 3 Foxes (9-2) earned a first-round bye and will face either Sewickley Academy or Latrobe in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Lebanon.

Shady Side Academy (14-4), the No. 5 seed, will play North Hills at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fox Chapel in the first round.
