High school roundup for April 27, 2018: Vincentian upsets No. 1 Union

Aidan Thomson's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted No. 3 Vincentian Academy to a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Union in a Section 1-A baseball game Friday afternoon.

Danny Morgano had an RBI single earlier in the seventh and was the winning pitcher. Kyler Fedko, who was intentionally walked four times, scored the winning run for the Royals (9-2, 6-1).

Evan Pinkerton had two doubles for Union (8-3, 6-1).

Butler 6, North Allegheny 2 — Grant Metzger threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Butler (8-4, 5-3) to a Section 1-6A win.

Central Catholic 12, Shaler 4 — Andrew Walker was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs, and Brandon Gelpi hit a grand slam as No. 3 Central Catholic (10-4, 6-2) won a Section 1-6A game.

Pine-Richland 2, Seneca Valley 0 — Craig Kunkel was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs as Pine-Richland (8-5, 3-5) won a Section 1-6A game.

Canon-McMillan 14, Baldwin 3 (5 inn.) — Cam Weston hit three home runs, including a grand slam, and had eight RBIs as Canon-McMillan (10-4, 7-2) won in Section 3-6A. Ian Hess was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and also earned the win on the mound. Greydon Piechnick and Nick Serafino also homered.

Connellsville 4, Penn-Trafford 3 — Brody Bonadio was 3 for 4, and Cade Warrick homered to help Connellsville (2-10, 2-6) win a Section 2-6A game. Jordan Sabol, Cade Patterson and Tyler Chrise had the only three hits for Penn-Trafford (7-5, 5-3).

Norwin 10, Penn Hills 3 — Winning pitcher Aidan Shephard tripled, and Jayden Walker and Logan Liebdzinski added doubles as Norwin (5-5, 4-4) won in Section 2-6A.

Plum 3, Hempfield 2 (8 inn.) — Jackson Rogers scored the winning run on Ryan Kircher's ground ball to first base in the bottom of the eighth, giving Plum (10-3, 6-2) a Section 2-6A win over No. 1 Hempfield. Kircher struck out 12 batters in 5 ²⁄₃ innings for the Mustangs and also drove in a run in the first inning. Isaiah DiAndreth drove in a pair of runs for Hempfield (11-4, 6-2).

Fox Chapel 12, Obama Academy 3 — Ryan Wagner had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs for Fox Chapel (6-6, 5-4) in a Section 1-5A win at Obama Academy (0-7, 0-7). Dante DeBaldo had two doubles and knocked in a pair of runs and Alex Miles doubled for the Foxes. Nick Costentino homered and doubled for Obama Academy.

Latrobe 11, McKeesport 7 — Latrobe rebounded from Wednesday's tough loss to Gateway with a victory over host McKeesport (3-9, 2-8) in a Section 3-5A game.

Preston Boerio knocked in three runs, and Griffin Clark, Isaac Echard, Ben Rafferty and Connor Mondock all had two hits for the Wildcats (6-6, 5-5).

Jacob Bradish earned the victory.

North Hills 6, Kiski Area 2 — Nick Smith doubled for Kiski Area (1-7, 1-6) in a Section 1 loss to Class 5A No. 3 North Hills (13-2, 9-1). Alex Glatz and JT Mazula doubled and drove in two runs each for North Hills. Cameron Guercio had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Cavaliers.

Knoch 12, Greensburg Salem 2 (5 inn.) — Dylan Swarmer was 4 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs as Knoch (10-1, 9-1) won in Section 1-4A. Matt Wicker was 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Golden Lions (6-5, 5-4).

Blackhawk 4, Hopewell 1 — Carson Gray hit a three-run double in the fourth inning to help No. 1 Blackhawk (12-0, 10-0) earn a Section 2-4A win. Mike Turconi allowed three hits and struck out 12 to earn the victory.

South Fayette 5, New Castle 3 — Matt Primm was 4 for 5 with three RBIs to lift South Fayette (10-4, 8-2) to a win in Section 2-4A.

Valley 18, South Allegheny 3 — Dan Antonacci had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs as Valley dominated South Allegheny (0-6, 0-6) in a Section 1-3A match-up. Andrew Serakowski also had a pair of hits and three RBIs, and Shawn Demharter struck out five batters while picking up the win for Valley (8-5, 6-2).

Avonworth 5, Ellwood City 2 — Tim Stewart was 3 for 3 with a double, home run and RBI as No. 2 Avonworth (9-2, 7-2) won in Section 2-3A. Ryan Felter allowed four hits and struck out six in the complete-game win.

Carmichaels 13, California 5 — Nick Mundell doubled in three runs, and Dylan Wilson had two hits and two RBIs as No. 3 Carmichaels (8-2, 8-1) won in Section 1-2A.

Serra Catholic 16, Sto-Rox 1 (3 inn.) — Mark Black was 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs, and Patrick Brennan was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs as No. 1 Serra Catholic (13-0, 9-0) won in Section 3-2A.

Apollo-Ridge 14, Northgate 11 — Daniel Rametta's three-run triple helped ignite a late comeback as Apollo-Ridge picked up a Section 3-2A victory over Northgate (0-7, 0-7). Zach Hrena also had three hits for the Vikings (4-3, 4-3) and Anthony Blackgrove picked up the win in relief.

Leechburg 3, St. Joseph 2 — The Blue Devils (3-8, 3-5) won the battle for fourth place in Section 1-A with two runs in the top of the sixth. Winning pitcher Corey Kerecz struck out 10 and singled home the deciding runs. Sophomore Tyler Wood struck out 17 for the Spartans (2-7, 2-4) in a game delayed 63 minutes for rain and lightning.

Greensburg Central Catholic 13, Geibel 0 (5 inn.) — Alex Miller was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Bryce Kurpiel and Tom Voelker also had two hits to lift No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (6-3, 6-1) to a Section 2-A win. Ben LaCarte allowed two hits with seven strikeouts in four innings to earn the win.

Jeannette 16, Mapletown 1 (3 inn.) — In Section 2-A, Drake Petrillo was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to help No. 4 Jeannette (7-1, 5-1) earn a victory. Winning pitcher Tyler Elliott added three RBIs, and Derrick Miller knocked in two runs.

Derry 3, Richland 2 — At the Homer Center Baseball Classic, Ryan Polinsky had an RBI, and Dominick Jellison threw a scoreless inning of relief to lead Derry (2-10) to a victory. Paul Koontz allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Softball

Latrobe 15, Penn Hills 0 (3 inn.) — Jordan Tallman tossed a three-inning perfect game with nine strikeouts as No. 2 Latrobe (7-1, 6-1) won in Section 2-6A. She also went 2 for 3 with a double.

North Allegheny 6, Pine-Richland 2 — Chloe Szczepaniak hit a two-run home run, and Ashley Adams doubled in two runs as No. 5 North Allegheny (10-6, 7-1) won a Section 3-6A game.

Kiski Area 4, Gateway 0 — Megan Andree pitched a perfect game, striking out 10 batters, to give the Cavaliers a Section 1-5A victory.

Kiski Area catcher Alayna Mintz singled and drove in three runs as the Cavaliers (6-5, 5-5) moved within a half-game of Plum for fourth place in the section.

Plum 13, Woodland Hills 1 (5 inn.) — MacKenzie Lake and Jillian Durst homered to help Plum (7-6, 6-5) cruise to a Section 1-5A win over Woodland Hills (0-10, 0-10). Durst finished 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Lake had a pair of RBIs. Olivia Wendell, Sidney Young, Abbey Froehlich and Melanie Mienke had doubles for the Mustangs. Mienke surrendered two hits and struck out six in five innings.

Connellsville 10, McKeesport 3 — In Section 2-5A, Kaybree Benton was 3 for 4 to help Connellsville (8-4, 7-3) earn a victory.

Knoch 12, Derry 1 — Monica Gourley was 4 for 4, and Celia Knappenberger homered to guide Knoch (8-4, 5-3) to a Section 1-4A win. Hannah Wedow doubled for Derry (3-5, 2-4).

Elizabeth Forward 8, South Fayette 3 — Taylor Ludwick homered and had three RBIs as No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (12-2, 6-2) won in Section 2-4A. Jordan Pinneri was 3 for 4.

Burrell 5, South Allegheny 0 (6 inn.) — Kayla Santucci had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, and Brittany Dunn pitched six scoreless innings to help Class 3A No. 5 Burrell (8-2, 7-1) down South Allegheny (9-5, 4-4) in a rain-shortened Section 1 game. Cara Fiore and Elizabeth Clark had RBI singles for the Bucs, and Charlie Confer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

South Park 16, McGuffey 3 (5 inn.) — Kaitlyn Pavlick was 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs, as No. 1 South Park (7-1, 7-0) rolled to a Section 3-3A win. Winning pitcher Jess Dean had two double and two RBIs, and Kelli Mesick and Grace Albitz were each 4 for 4.

Serra Catholic 7, Brentwood 4 — In Section 1-2A, Nina Grandey was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs as No. 5 Serra Catholic (9-1, 7-0) earned a victory. Theresa Terlecki was 3 for 3 with one RBI.

Seton LaSalle 11, OLSH 0 (5 inn.) — Lexi Wagner tripled, homered and had three RBIs as Seton LaSalle (9-1, 7-0) won in Section 1-2A.

Shady Side Academy 4, Apollo-Ridge 3 — Apollo-Ridge (4-3, 3-2) led 3-0 through five innings, but Shady Side Academy (3-2, 3-2) scored two runs in the sixth and seventh to steal a Section 2-2A win. Mollie Charlton doubled for the Vikings. Kate Hart had three hits, including a pair of doubles for Shady Side Academy, which swept the season series.

Riverview 7, Jeannette 0 — Alyssa Cappa picked up the win, throwing a complete-game, one-hit gem as Riverview defeated Jeannette (2-6, 2-6) in a Section 3-A matchup. Cappa also recorded three hits and Anne Belter added two RBIs for Riverview (6-3, 5-3).

St. Joseph 11, Bishop Canevin 2 — Shelby Gogal finished with three hits and three RBIs while striking out four in a complete-game effort to help St. Joseph (6-2, 5-2) capture a Section 3-A victory over Bishop Canevin (4-3, 3-3). Serena Edgar also had three hits and an RBI, and Calley Neelan added three hits and three RBIs.

Belle Vernon 4, Ligonier Valley 1 — Bailey Parshall threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts as Class 4A No. 4 Belle Vernon (10-2) won a nonsection game. Lexie Petrof had an RBI for Ligonier Valley (9-2).

Hempfield 7, Mifflin County 0 — Laura Fox was 3 for 4 with a double, two triples and two RBIs to help Class 6A No. 1 Hempfield (9-1) to a nonsection win. Kelsey Tobin also knocked in two runs, and Maddie Uschock threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.

West Mifflin 4, Thomas Jefferson 3 — Kristen Davies hit walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to help West Mifflin (8-5) secure a nonsection win. The Jaguars (6-4) opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
