The weather will cooperate not only for baseball and softball action Monday, but also for the quarterfinals of the 2018 WPIAL boys team tennis championships.

The higher seeds advanced in the AAA tournament setting up these second round matches: Franklin Regional at Fox Chapel; Upper St. Clair at North Allegheny; Hampton at Shady Side Academy; and Allderdice at Peters Township

In the AA playoffs second round: Knoch at Sewickley Academy; Valley at South Park; Thomas Jefferson at Quaker Valley; and Blackhawk at Indiana

All the matches begin at 3:30 p.m. with the winners advancing to the semifinals.

Championship rematch

The two teams — Hempfield and Latrobe — that played in the first WPIAL 6A softball championship game meet for the first of two meetings this season with first place in Section 2-6A at stake.

Hempfield captured a third consecutive WPIAL crown with a 13-2 drubbing of Latrobe last June. That win was the Spartans third win over the Wildcats in 2017, although the two regular season games were a lot tighter with Hempfield winning 3-1 and 3-0 games to win another section title.

Now, the rivals collide in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Latrobe is 5-0 in the section and 6-0 overall. Hempfield is also perfect in the section at 4-0 and 5-1 overall with their only loss coming against Penn-Trafford on Sunday.

You can hear the softball showdown at 4 p.m. here on the Trib Live High School Sports Network .

Northern traffic

There are two weeks left in the regular season, and there is a four-way tie for first place in Section 1-6A between Butler, Central Catholic, Seneca Valley and Shaler. North Allegheny is in fifth place, a game out of first and defending champion Pine-Richland is in last place, two games out of first.

Every day of games in this section is an adventure. Monday's fun has Pine-Richland hosting Butler, North Allegheny at Shaler and Seneca Valley taking on Central Catholic at LaRoche in a game you can listen to on Trib HSSN.

Other key baseball games around the WPIAL on Monday include Mt. Lebanon against Canon-McMillan, Moon at Chartiers Valley, Franklin Regional visiting Gateway, Carlynton at Apollo-Ridge and Quigley Catholic hosting Western Beaver.
