High school roundup for April 20, 2018: North Allegheny baseball tops No. 2 Pine-Richland

If the first half of the WPIAL baseball season is any indication, the battle for playoff berths in Section 1-6A could be a photo finish.

Four teams are 3-2 in section play after Friday night's games, and North Allegheny is a game behind at 2-3 after taking down No. 2 Pine-Richland, 3-1, on Friday night.

Luke Trueman and Juliano Capretta each knocked in runs, and Ben Surman was 2 for 3 with a double to lead the No. 4-ranked Tigers (6-3, 2-3).

Josh Johnson was 2 for 3, and Matt Wood doubled for Pine-Richland (6-4, 1-4), the preseason No. 1 team in Class 6A which is now in last place in Section 1.

Central Catholic (7-3), Butler (6-3), Seneca Valley (6-4) and Shaler (5-5) are tied for first in Section 1 at 3-2.

Norwin 9, Connellsville 3 — Aidan Shephard earned the victory as Norwin (4-2, 3-1) won a Section 2-6A game at Connellsville (1-8, 1-4). Nick Zona and Derek Turkovski had extra-base hits for the Knights, who had seven hits.

Penn-Trafford 11, Penn Hills 1 (6 inn.) — Josh Spiegel hit a three-run home run, and Jordan Sabol was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to help Penn-Trafford (5-3, 3-1) win a Section 2-6A game. Zach Mancz was 2 for 2 with a double and RBI for the Warriors.

Canon-McMillan 4, Upper St. Clair 1 — Ian Hess doubled in three runs in the top of the seventh inning to lift No. 5 Canon-McMillan (8-3, 5-2) to a Section 3-6A win. Zach Rohaley got the win with an inning of relief where he struck out the side. Cameron Weston struck out 11 and allowed three hits in 5 23 innings.

Peters Township 4, Baldwin 0 — Colin Caven homered and Garrett Miller threw a five-hitter to guide Peters Township (6-7, 3-4) to a Section 3-6A victory.

Kiski Area 10, Obama Academy 0 (6 inn.) — Billy Perroz tripled and drove in a pair of runs for Kiski Area (1-5, 1-4) in a Section 1-5A victory. Ryne Wallace earned the win for the Cavaliers, who allowed just two hits.

Mars 6, Armstrong 4 — Frank Craska and Joe Craska each had two RBIs to help No. 4 Mars (5-3, 3-1) to a Section 1-5A win.

West Allegheny 10, Brashear 0 (4 inn.) — Conner Bartley allowed two hits and had eight strikeouts in four innings to guide No. 1 West Allegheny (5-0, 5-0) to a Section 2-5A win. Austin Hendrick had a two-run double for the Indians.

Latrobe 17, Woodland Hills 3 — Connor Mondock was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and Griffin Clark went 4 for 6 with two RBIs to help Latrobe (4-5, 3-4) to a Section 3-5A win. Preston Boerio added three RBIs.

Deer Lakes 13, Yough 2 — Jake McCaskey had three hits, including two doubles and drove in a pair of runs to lead Deer Lakes (5-4, 2-3) to a Section 1-4A victory at Yough (2-5, 2-5).

Knoch 11, Derry 4 — Andy Pipes knocked in three runs, and Ethan Sloane and Ben McMillen had two RBIs each to lift Knoch (7-1, 6-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Conner Watt and Tristen Grimm had two hits each for Derry (2-7, 1-6).

Blackhawk 10, Ambridge 0 — Mike Turconi threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 1 Blackhawk (9-0, 7-0) won in Section 2-4A. Marco Borello had two doubles for the Cougars.

Hopewell 10, South Fayette 6 — Tyler Beck was 3 for 4 to guide Hopewell (6-6, 4-3) to a Section 2-4A win.

Belle Vernon 12, McGuffey 1 (5 inn.) — Jake Rathway was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Josh Hoffman had a double and two RBIs as Belle Vernon (5-1, 5-1) won in Section 3-4A.

Burrell 7, Shady Side Academy 6 — Tanner Spohn delivered a two-out, two-strike single up in the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Burrell a walk-off victory in a Section 1-3A game.

Spohn came on in relief in the second and allowed one run on three hits in 5 13 innings to earn the victory. Burrell (5-1, 4-1) trailed 6-1 after three innings but scored two runs in the fourth and sixth to tie the score. Zac Kerr finished with three hits, including a double, and Zac Miller had a double and two RBIs for the Bucs.

Freeport 7, Highlands 6 (8 inn.) — Sean Furlong scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to lift Class 4A No. 3 Freeport (7-0, 7-0) to a Section 1 win. Highlands scored three times in the seventh to force extra innings. Furlong reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Coulton Stewart. Noah Gillette homered, and Nick Cichello, Zack Godfrey and Josh Stuckley had doubles for Highlands (2-5, 2-4).

Valley 9, East Allegheny 4 — The Vikings (6-4, 4-1) led 7-0 after five innings en route to the Section 1-3A victory over the Wildcats (0-5, 0-4). Jake McNabb had two hits and three RBIs to lead Valley, and Shawn Demharter, Eli Ferres, Dan Antonacci added two hits each. Ferres picked up the win, giving up four hits and four walks while striking out six in 5 13 innings.

Avonworth 11, Mohawk 0 (5 inn.) — Turner Grau and Corey Dick combined for a five-inning no-hitter as No. 2 Avonworth (7-0, 5-0) won in Section 2-3A.

Ellwood City 2, New Brighton 1 — Sammy DiCaprio had an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to help Ellwood City (3-5, 3-3) earn a Section 2-3A win.

Riverside 3, South Side 1 — Austin Dambach had a double, triple and two RBIs as No. 1 Riverside (7-1, 6-0) won in Section 2-3A. Gunnar Boehm threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Washington 8, Charleroi 4 — Alex Crawford was 3 for 4 with three RBIs as Washington (2-5, 2-2) won in Section 3-3A. Cooper Sharp allowed four hits and had six strikeouts in the win.

California 8, Fort Cherry 5 — Brandon Powell had a home run and four RBIs, as California (4-3, 4-2) won a Section 1-2A game. Hunter Terpack was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Fort Cherry (5-2, 5-2).

Neshannock 19, Freedom 9 — Nick Perry was 4 for 5 with four RBIs to lead No. 2 Neshannock (11-2, 8-2) to a Section 2-2A win.

Greensburg Central Catholic 11-19, Monessen 1-4 — Bryce Kurpiel was 4 for 4 with five RBIs in the first game, and 3 for 4 with four RBIs in Game 2, as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (5-2, 5-0) won in Section 2-A.

Antonio Cavallo threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts to earn the Game 1 win. Bruce Leonard scattered eight hits with eight strikeouts in Game 2.

Jeannette 11, West Greene 6 — Tre Cunningham and Drake Petrillo knocked in three runs each, and Tyler Elliott was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, as No. 4 Jeannette (6-1, 4-1) won in Section 2-A.

Winning pitcher Derrick Miller added two hits and two RBIs, and Seth Howard was 3 for 5.

Hempfield 9, Butler 5 — Luke Hudson was 3 for 3 with a triple, home run and four RBIs, as No. 3 Hempfield (8-2) won a nonsection game at No. 1 Butler (6-3). Traynor Granatire doubled, and Nick DiAndreth was 3 for 3 for the Spartans.

Softball

Fox Chapel 18, Penn Hills 1 (5 inn.) — Krystyna Burdelski went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Fox Chapel (4-3, 3-3) in a Section 2-6A win at Penn Hills (1-5, 1-5). Tawyna Holben and Eva Speacht had two hits and three RBIs apiece, and Bri O'Malley tripled twice and drove in a pair.

Gateway 4, Kiski Area 3 — Megan Andree struck out 13, but the Cavaliers (3-4, 3-4) dropped a Section 1-5A game. Maura Ryan earned the win for Gateway (4-3, 4-3), giving up five hits and striking out five.

Penn-Trafford 13, Plum 6 — Penn-Trafford (8-2, 8-1) scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to secure a Section 1-5A win. Emma Nedley was 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, and Allie Prady and Emma Armstrong each had three hits and two RBIs for the No. 4-ranked Warriors. Gabrielle Fischetti had two doubles, and Alyssa Schofield and Francesca Beighley each had two RBIs for Plum (5-4, 4-4).

Albert Gallatin 7, Thomas Jefferson 2 — Analia Paoli and Hannah Umbel each homered to help No. 2 Albert Gallatin (6-0, 5-0) win in Section 2-5A.

Connellsville 5, Trinity 3 — Kylee Yothers knocked in two runs to help Connellsville (5-4, 4-3) win in Section 2-5A.

Hampton 5, Chartiers Valley 0 — Annelise Probeck threw a five-hitter with 17 strikeouts as Hampton (2-4, 2-3) won a Section 3-5A game. Hampton won the second game of the doubleheader, 14-2.

Indiana 5, Highlands 1 — Emily Cochran struck out seven and doubled for Highlands (0-4, 0-4) in a losing effort at Indiana (5-1, 4-1) in a Section 1-4A game. Alley Bush homered for Indiana.

Keystone Oaks 4, South Fayette 3 — Sierra LaDonne knocked in two runs, and Bri Butler was 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI as Keystone Oaks (3-6, 1-5) won in Section 2-4A. Lexi Yates had two RBIs for South Fayette (3-7, 1-5).

New Castle 2, Blackhawk 1 (8 inn.) — Alexa Reider doubled in the bottom of the eighth and stole home to give New Castle (2-4, 2-3) a walk-off victory in Section 3-4A.

Valley 10, East Allegheny 0 (6 inn.) — Casey Gatto doubled and knocked in two runs, and Andie Jo Conwell gave up two hits and struck out three as Valley rolled past Section 1-3A rival East Allegheny (0-4, 0-4). Lauren Schrock singled and knocked in three runs, and Domenica Wolfe added a double and an RBI for Valley (1-4, 1-3).

Riverside 12, Beaver Falls 10 — Camryn Monk was 2 for 4 with four RBIs as Riverside (2-4, 2-3) won in Section 2-3A.

South Park 7, Waynesburg 2 — Kaitlin Morrison was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs as No. 1 South Park (5-1, 5-0) won a Section 3-3A game. Jess Dean threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Burrell 9, Steel Valley 3 — Kayla Santucci hit a bases-clearing double in the fifth as Burrell rallied to beat Steel Valley (6-4) in nonsection play. Brittany Dunn doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs while giving up six hits and striking out 12 for Burrell (6-2).

St. Joseph 11, Jeannette 4 — Ava Swanson had three hits, including a double, to help St. Joseph (4-1, 4-1) earn a Section 3-A victory at Jeannette (2-4, 2-4). Serena Edgar doubled for the Spartans. Faith Johnston was 2 for 4 and took the loss.

Belle Vernon 2, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Sophia Godzack and Bailey Parshall homered in the top of the eighth inning to lead Class 4A No. 4 Belle Vernon (7-2) to a nonsection win. Parshall threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Elizabeth Forward 12, Montour 7 — Kaylee Ludwick homered, and Cassidy Kern was 4 for 4 with three RBIs as No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (9-1) won a nonsection game.

Freeport 5, Greensburg Salem 4 (8 inn.) — Emily Schmidt drilled a chopper down the third-base line to score Madison Wagner from second in the top of the eighth as Class 3A No. 2-ranked Freeport (6-0) picked up the nonsection win. Pitcher Mattie White gave up nine hits and struck out two for Greensburg Salem (2-6).

Mt. Pleasant 7, Franklin Regional 0 — Carolyn Alincic earned the win as Class 4A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (6-0) won a nonsection game at Class 5A No. 5 Franklin Regional (8-2).

Ligonier Valley 9, Northern Cambria 3 — Lindsey Stormer was 3 for 4 with four RBIs to help Ligonier Valley (7-1, 6-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win.

Girls lacrosse

Norwin 20, Hempfield 4 — Maura Columbus scored six times, and Julia Ruzewski had eight saves as Norwin won its third straight game.

Boys tennis

Valley 3, Mt. Pleasant 2 — The No. 5 Vikings (11-1) swept all three singles matches as they opened the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs with a win. Alex Ward (6-3 6-3), Michael Saliba (6-4, 6-0) and Michael Odrey (6-2, 6-4) tallied straight-set wins for the Vikings, who will play South Park in Monday's quarterfinals.
