High school roundup for April 12, 2018: No. 2 Yough softball takes down No. 3 Elizabeth Forward

Section 2 features three softball teams ranked in the top five in Class 4A, which should lead to several exciting matchups this season.

On Thursday, No. 2-ranked Yough earned a key victory to stay atop the section standings.

Hannah Christner hit a three-run home run, and Nina Maroney was 3 for 4 with a triple and RBI as Yough earned a 7-2 win over No. 3-ranked Elizabeth Forward.

Kierra Waywood scattered eight hits with seven strikeouts, and Karlie Clark hit a two-run single for the Cougars (7-1, 4-0).

Losing pitcher Kailey Larcinese was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Elizabeth Forward (7-1, 3-1), which defeated No. 4-ranked Belle Vernon (4-1, 1-1) last week.

Belle Vernon 2, Keystone Oaks 0 — Bailey Parshall threw a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts and also had three hits, including two doubles, to guide No. 4 Belle Vernon (4-1, 1-1) to a Section 2-4A win. Jaelynn Clegg Jordan French homered for the Leopards.

Knoch 8, Highlands 0 — Quinn Hughes went 4 for 4 for Knoch, with a double, triple and three RBIs in a Section 1-4A win. Tori Lohler singled twice for Highlands (0-3, 0-3).

Baldwin 9, Mt. Lebanon 3 — Taylor Dadig was 3 for 5 with a home run, and Allison Murray hit two homers to help Baldwin (2-2, 2-1) win in Section 1-6A.

Canon-McMillan 11, Peters Township 5 — Katelyn Greaves and Eli Kotar each homered to help Canon-McMillan (3-0, 2-0) win a Section 1-6A game.

Jill Yeates had a home run and three RBIs, and Haley Cecere was 3 for 3 for Peters Township (4-5, 2-3).

Hempfield 17, Allderdice 0 (3 inn.) — Kylie Saus tossed three no-hit innings with six strikeouts as No. 1 Hempfield (5-0, 4-0) won a Section 2-6A game. Laura Fox and Megan Monzo had extra-base hits.

Hempfield 13, Penn Hills 0 (5 inn.) — Maddie Uschock threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts as No. 1 Hempfield rolled to a Section 2-6A win over Penn Hills (1-3, 1-3).

Norwin 3, Fox Chapel 2 — Victoria Shimko hit a two-run double as part of a three-run third inning as Norwin (2-2, 1-2) earned a Section 2-6A victory. Krystyna Burdelski, Grace Katz and Eva Speacht each doubled for the Foxes (2-3, 1-3).

Franklin Regional 3, Greensburg Salem 1 — Jocelyn Behr and Kylie O'Neal each knocked in runs, and Angalee Beall threw a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts to guide Franklin Regional (6-1, 4-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Rena Caruso allowed six hits and struck out seven for Greensburg Salem (2-4, 1-3).

Gateway 16, Armstrong 5 (5 inn.) — Danielle Taylor was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs as Gateway (2-2, 2-2) won in Section 1-5A. Emma Kennedy was 4 for 5 with a double, homer and four RBIs, and Sydney Hunter also homered.

Plum 16, Woodland Hills 3 (5 inn.) — The Mustangs scored nine times in the second inning and rolled to a Section 1-5A victory. MacKenzie Lake tripled twice and drove in two runs for Plum (4-1, 3-1). Sydney Young and Gabrielle Fischetti tallied three and two runs, respectively, and Lindsey Suprano recorded a pair of hits. Melanie Mienke struck out 10 to earn the win.

Freeport 9, Valley 3 — Ally DeJidas hit for the cycle and drove in four runs to lead Class 3A No. 5 Freeport (4-0, 3-0) to a Section 1 win over Valley (0-3, 0-2). DeJidas finished 4 for 4 and capped the cycle by hitting a home run in her final at-bat. Ashleigh Schmidt, Emily Schmidt and Jenna Hildebrand had a double each for the Yellowjackets. Andie Jo Conwell and Madison Gatto singled twice for the Vikings.

South Allegheny 11, Deer Lakes 4 — Class 3A No. 3 Deer Lakes led by a run after four innings, but South Allegheny (6-2, 2-1) scored six in the fifth to pull away for a Section 1 win. Mikayla Blair homered for the Lancers (2-2, 1-2), and Katelynn Blair had a pair of doubles. Kalsey Denk homered for South Allegheny.

Serra Catholic 5, Carlynton 1 — Nina Grandey and Madison Carr each were 3 for 4, and Rebekah Pais homered as Serra Catholic (4-0, 3-0) won in Section 1-2A.

Shady Side Academy 11, Apollo-Ridge 10 — Bella Fiello hit a two-run walk-off single that capped a four-run bottom of the seventh in a comeback victory for Shady Side Academy (1-0, 1-0) in a Section 2-2A game. Teresa Desimone collected three hits for Apollo-Ridge (1-2, 1-1), including a double.

Springdale 13, Greensburg Central Catholic 7 — The Dynamos' Faith Lepovsky doubled, singled twice, drove in two runs and picked up the win from the circle to help Springdale to a win over Greensburg Central Catholic (0-1, 0-1) in the Section 2-2A opener. Anna Harmon went 5 for 6 at the plate and Dayna Zezza doubled for Springdale (1-1, 1-0). Bella Skatell was 3 for 4 for GCC.

Frazier 14, Chartiers-Houston 5 — Rylee Evans was 3 for 5 with a double, and Logan Hartman doubled, homered and had two RBIs as No. 2 Frazier (4-3, 3-0) beat No. 1 Chartiers-Houston in a Section 3-2A game. Kaci Alderson was 4 for 4 for the Bucs.

Mohawk 10, Laurel 2 — Madison Shiderly and Alyssa Young each homered to help Mohawk (5-0, 4-0) win in Section 4-2A.

Mapletown 4, California 3 — Macee Chesney hit a walk-off single to score Sarah Chory, who had tripled, as Mapletown (4-0, 2-0) won in Section 2-A.

Mt. Pleasant 5, Penn-Trafford 1 — Haylie Brunson was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs as Class 4A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (4-0) won a nonsection game. Carolyn Alincic threw a three-hitter for the Vikings.

Emma Armstrong knocked in a run for Penn-Trafford (4-1).

Ligonier Valley 9, Homer-Center 0 — Lexie Petrof was 3 for 5 with a double, home run and two RBIs, and Abi Cmar and Kaylee Colt each knocked in two runs to help Ligonier Valley win in the District 6 Heritage Conference.

Jane Garver threw a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts for the Rams, who improved to 5-0 in conference play.

Baseball

Bethel Park 8, Peters Township 7 — Justin Meis hit a walk-off single to score two runs and give Bethel Park (3-2, 3-0) a Section 3-6A win. Adam Malecki homered for the Black Hawks.

Fox Chapel 5, Hampton 4 — Ryan Wagner collected three hits, including a double, and drove in a run as Fox Chapel edged Class 5A No. 3 Hampton in a Section 1 game.

The Foxes improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in section play, while Hampton fell to 1-2 overall and in the section.

Alex McRandal and Mitch Miles each added two hits as part of Fox Chapel's nine-hit attack. Alex Miles picked up the win with four strikeouts and no walks in 4 ¹⁄₃ innings.

Mars 6, Kiski Area 5 — The No. 1 Planets (4-2, 2-0) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off victory over Kiski Area (0-3, 0-2) in Section 1-5A play at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler. Cameron Guercio, Garret Polka, Billy Perroz and Ryne Wallace each had a hit and a run batted in for the Cavaliers, while Nick Yohe also tallied an RBI. Kiski rallied from a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth.

North Hills 16, Armstrong 12 — Jordan Pitchford was 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs as North Hills (8-1, 4-0) rolled to a Section 1-5A win.

Gateway 8, Latrobe 1 — Brian Reid hit a grand slam, and Marc Caggiano had two hits and two RBIs as Gateway (3-1, 2-1) won in Section 3-5A. Isaac Echard was 2 for 4 for Latrobe (3-3, 2-2).

Greensburg Salem 12, Highlands 2 (5 inn.) — Jack Oberdorf was 3 for 3 with a double, and winning pitcher Aaren Putt hit a three-run home run to help Greensburg Salem (3-3, 2-2) to a Section 1-4A win. Dajauhn Hertzog, Andrew Rosenberg and Jonathan Borbonus also had two hits.

Yough 6, Indiana 4 — Caden Kastronis hit a three-run triple in the second inning to help Yough (2-1, 2-1) earn a win in Section 1-4A. Jarett Bach threw a six-hitter with 13 strikeouts to secure the win.

Seton LaSalle 19, Southmoreland 6 (5 inn.) — Trevor O'Donnell and Nick Roell each had four RBIs to lead Seton LaSalle (4-4, 2-2) to a Section 3-3A win. Max Zimmerman was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Southmoreland (0-5, 0-4).

Serra Catholic 12, Riverview 1 (5 inn.) — The No. 1 Eagles (9-0, 5-0) broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the second inning and cruised to a Section 3-2A victory over the Raiders (1-4, 0-4). Mark Black had three hits to lead Serra, while Ben Bowen recorded three RBIs. Nate Piontka picked up the win for the Eagles. Mark McClelland took the loss.

Eden Christian 15, St. Joseph 3 — Eden Christian (2-1, 2-0) scored 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to break open a close game and score a Section 1-A victory over St. Joseph (0-4, 0-2). Jack Hasley had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Eden, while Jared Morris added three RBIs. Tyler Wood doubled for the Spartans.

Union 17, Springdale 4 — Dylan Hargenrader doubled and drove in a run, but the Dynamos couldn't overcome 10 errors as Springdale (0-4, 0-2) fell to Union (3-1, 2-0) in a Section 1-A matchup.

North Allegheny 6, Penn-Trafford 2 — Colin Cain and Juliano Capretta each went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs as No. 2 North Allegheny (4-1) won a nonsection game. Caden Wood added a two-run homer. Mario Disso and Cade Patterson each had RBIs, and Ben Mongelluzzo took the loss for Penn-Trafford (3-3).
