High school roundup for March 26: Belle Vernon’s Parshall fans 20 in season opener

Bailey Parshall wasted little time getting into midseason form.

The Belle Vernon pitcher and Penn State recruit struck out a school-record 20 in leading the Leopards to a 2-1 nonsection win over Steel Valley on Monday.

The mark bettered her record of 17 for a seven-inning game set two years ago. She also beat the school record of 19 set by Ashley Nichols in a 12-inning game in 2007.

Parshall and Kourtney Gavatorta had RBIs for the Leopards (1-0). Marissa Hoesch knocked in a run for Steel Valley (0-1).

Albert Gallatin 9, Burrell 2 — The Colonials (1-0) broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second inning for a nonsection victory. Kelly Kitowski singled and tripled for the Bucs (0-1).

Bethel Park 11, Oakland Catholic 0 (6 inn.) — Reagan Milliken was 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs as Bethel Park (1-0) won a nonsection game. Kayla Miehl threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts.

Butler 10, New Castle 6 — Faith Hansotte was 4 for 4, and Julia Gibson homered to lift Butler (1-0) to a nonsection win. Ali Graham struck out 11 batters in the win.

Chartiers-Houston 5, Southmoreland 1 — Class 2A No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (1-0) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure a nonsection win.

Kasey Scears had a double in the win for the Bucs.

Lexi Klatt took the loss for Southmoreland (0-1).

Elizabeth Forward 15, Piqua, Ohio 0 (3 inn.) — Taylor Ludwick homered and had five RBIs for Elizabeth Forward (3-0) in a nonsection victory in Orlando.

Fox Chapel 10, Hampton 7 — Grace Katz doubled as Fox Chapel used a five-run sixth inning to defeat Hampton in nonsection play. Krystyna Burdelski picked up the win for Fox Chapel (1-0). Julia Powers doubled, and Hannah Bradfield singled three times for Hampton (0-1).

Greensburg Salem 3, Derry 2 — Nikki Mellinger homered, and Tiffany Bruzda tripled for Greensburg Salem (1-0) in a nonsection victory at Derry (0-1).

Rena Caruso earned the victory. Chelsea Bisi was 2 for 4, and Maddie Berger took the loss for the Trojans.

Hempfield 6, Connellsville 0 — Olivia Persin was 3 for 3 with four RBIs to help No. 1-ranked Hempfield (1-0) to a nonsection win.

Ashley Orischak, Olivia Glosner and Emma Hoffner had doubles, and Maddie Uschock earned the complete-game victory.

Mia Burd was 3 for 3 with a double for Connellsville (0-1).

Indiana 8, Valley 0 — Alley Bush doubled twice and singled for Indiana (1-0), and Sara Zimmerman had three hits in a nonsection win over Valley (0-1). Lauren Schrock took the loss for the Vikings.

Leechburg 15, Springdale 0 (4 inn.) — Grace Reinke had three doubles and two RBIs in Class A No. 3 Leechburg's nonsection win over Springdale. Kristen Knapp doubled twice and had two RBIs. Morgan Pierce tripled, singled twice, drove in two runs and picked up the win for Leechburg (1-0). She had six strikeouts. Natalie Woitas singled for Springdale (0-1).

Monessen 4, Frazier 3 — Dana Vatakis struck out 10 and scattered eight hits as Class A No. 2 Monessen (1-0) won a nonsection game over Class 2A No. 1 Frazier (0-1).

Plum 5, Shaler 3 — Sidney Shanter's single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Alyssa Schofield and gave Plum a walk-off victory in a nonsection game.

MacKenzie Lake added a double for Plum (1-0), while Abbey Froehlich picked up the win in the circle.

Seneca Valley 6, Moon 1 — Maura Pasquale homered for Class 6A No. 4 Seneca Valley (1-0) in a nonsection win over Class 5A No. 2 Moon (0-1).

St. Joseph 14, Apollo-Ridge 12 — Serena Edgar had three hits, including a two-run triple and run-scoring double, and St. Joseph scored eight runs in the sixth inning to rally for a nonsection victory over Apollo-Ridge. Anna Swierczewski added an RBI triple for the Spartans (1-0), who had 14 hits, and also was the team's winning pitcher. Mollie Charlton had four hits, including a double and RBI, for Apollo-Ridge (0-1), while Sierra Barr had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. The Vikings finished with 15 hits.

Upper St. Clair 7, Chartiers Valley 3 — Bess Gillece was 3 for 4 with three RBIs to help Upper St. Clair (1-0) to a nonsection victory.

Waynesburg 24, California 1 (3 inn.) — Rachel Elsenheimer was 4 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs, and Paige Rutan was 3 for 3 with a home run, two doubles and seven RBIs as Waynesburg (2-0) rolled to a nonsection win.

Yough 10, James Madison Memorial, Wisc. 0 (5 inn.) — Kaylyn Odelli had three hits and five RBIs, Sammie McGhee was 3 for 3 with three runs and Karlie Clark had two hits and two runs as Yough (3-1) won at the Walt Disney tournament in Orlando, Fla. Kierra Waywood struck out seven in a one-hitter.

Baseball

Blackhawk 9, Cathedral Prep 3 — Michael Turconi was 3 for 4 with two doubles and six RBIs as Class 4A No. 1 Blackhawk (1-0) won a nonsection game.

Gateway 6, Fox Chapel 0 — Fox Chapel starting pitcher Alex Miles gave up one run and struck out 14 batters through six innings, but the Gators put up five runs in the seventh to beat the Foxes (0-1) in a nonsection matchup. Brady Walker scored the winning run for the Gators (1-0) in the first inning on a wild pitch.

Jeannette 5, Beth-Center 2 — Class A No. 2 Jeannette (1-0) began its WPIAL title defense with a fast start, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to a nonsection win.

Alex Vickers earned the win, and Tyler Elliott had a double for the Jayhawks.

Jefferson-Morgan 10, Avella 0 — Jake Broadwater and Bryce Bedilon combined for a no-hitter as Jefferson-Morgan (1-0) won a nonsection game.

Penn-Trafford 4, Shaler 3 — Josh Spiegel homered, and Jon Peduzzi had a double as Penn-Trafford (1-0) won a nonsection game at Shaler (1-1).

Pine-Richland 5, Mt. Lebanon 2 — Jacob Weinberg homered for Pine-Richland (1-0) in a nonsection win.

Ringgold 7, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 2 — Bo Haines was 3 for 3 and hit two home runs as Ringgold (1-0) earned a nonsection win. Ryan Varley threw three scoreless innings and had six strikeouts to secure the win.

Riverview 5, St. Joseph 1 — The Raiders (1-0) scored two runs in both the second and third innings to gain the edge over rival St. Joseph in a nonsection game. Mark McClelland singled twice and doubled, and Mason Racicot singled and drove in two runs to lead Riverview (1-0). Jordan Zatawski picked up the win for the Raiders. Tyler Wood took the loss for St. Joseph (0-1).

Seneca Valley 4, Bethel Park 2 — Josh McClean was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs as Seneca Valley (1-0) won a nonsection game.

Serra Catholic 5, California 0 — Mark Black had two doubles and three RBIs, and Nate Piontka had 12 strikeouts on the mound to guide Class 2A No. 1 Serra Catholic (3-0) past No. 4 California (0-1) in a nonsection contest.

Seton LaSalle 9, Brentwood 3 — Joe Grimm was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs as Seton LaSalle (1-0) won in nonsection play.

Shenango 13, Ellwood City 2 — Ben Dottle was 3 for 4 with a double as Shenango (1-0) rolled to a nonsection victory.

Steel Valley 7, Greensburg Central Catholic 5 — Andrew Good was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Class 3A No. 2 Steel Valley (1-0) won a nonsection game. Antonio Cavallo was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Paul Rice was 2 for 2 with a double for Class A No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (0-1).

Vincentian Academy 5, Hawken, Ohio 3 — In Vero Beach, Fla., Danny Morgano and Stephen Turzai combined for a two-hitter, with Turzai earning the win as Vincentian Academy (1-0) was victorious. Kyler Fedko was 2 for 2 with a double in the win.

Girls lacrosse

Fox Chapel 18, Latrobe 3 — Sloan Rust and Mary Ellis provided the scoring with eight and four goals, respectively, as Fox Chapel cruised past Latrobe in a Section 2-AAA matchup. Marissa Hardiman added three goals, and Makenna Blazer chipped in with two for the Foxes (1-0).
