HERSHEY — Gavin Teasdale has a habit of coming up big in the Giant Center, and he provided more evidence of that Thursday morning.

The Jefferson-Morgan senior, seeking to become the 13th four-time individual champion in PIAA history, advanced to the 126-pound quarterfinals with an efficient technical fall victory over Midd-West's Avery Bassett on Thursday morning, the opening day of the state tournament.

It took Teasdale (41-2) just 2 minutes, 8 seconds to post a 16-0 victory over Bassett to advance to Friday's quarterfinals, where he'll meet Saegertown's Kenny Kiser.

Teasdale led a pack of 16 WPIAL wrestlers who advanced to the quarterfinals. Two of those wrestlers, Burrell senior Corey Christie (152 pounds) and McGuffey junior Christian Clutter (170), won a pair of bouts to get there, getting preliminary-round victories before posting first-round upsets. Christie knocked off fourth-seeded Alec English of Kane, while Clutter beat No. 3 seed Gavin Henry of Union City.

Other WPIAL wrestlers to advance to the quarterfinals included Quaker Valley freshman Conner Redinger and South Park freshman Joseph Fischer at 106 pounds; Burrell freshman Ian Oswalt at 113; Derry freshman Ty Cymmerman at 120; South Side senior Joe Debor and Southmoreland senior Tyler Griffiths at 145; Frazier sophomore Thayne Lawrence at 152; Southmoreland senior Jaden Datz at 170; Bentworth junior John Vargo at 182; Freedom junior Bryson Miller at 195; Derry junior Dom DeLuca at 220; and South Side senior Bishop McCoy and Valley junior David Schuffert at 285.

The Class AA quarterfinals will take place at 9 a.m. Friday, with the semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
