WPIAL basketball playoffs roundup for Feb. 24: Woodland Hills ousts Canon-McMillan in quarterfinals

Amante Britt scored 18 points and Keandre Bowles added 16 to lift No. 2-seeded Woodland Hills to a 57-41 victory over No. 7 Canon-McMillan in a WPIAL Class 6A boys basketball quarterfinal Saturday at Baldwin.

The Wolverines (20-3) held a 29-16 lead at halftime and finished the game on a 23-14 run.

They will play Pine-Richland (19-5) in the semifinals Wednesday at a time and site to be determined.

Jason Fowlkes had 18 points for the Big Macs (21-3).

Pine-Richland 48, Fox Chapel 39 — Andrew Kristofic scored 12 points and Greg Shulkosky and Kenny White added 10 points each as Pine-Richland (19-5) defeated Fox Chapel (17-6) in the WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinals at North Hills. Fox Chapel's Carson Cohen led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Don McGriff added 10 points. Pine-Richland led 17-13 in a low-scoring first half before Fox Chapel tied it at 30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Indiana 75, Uniontown 65 — At Gateway, Tommy Arbuckle scored 20 points as No. 4 Indiana (18-5) beat No. 12 Uniontown (14-10) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. Carlos Carter added 19 points and teammate Luke Thomas scored 17 points for Indiana, which pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Uniontown 29-18. Kam Fitzgerald hit six 3-pointers on way to scoring 26 points for Uniontown. Billy DeShields added 18 points and Trenton Uphold 16 points for Uniontown. Indiana will play No. 1 Quaker Valley in Wednesday's semifinals.

New Castle 55, South Fayette 45 — Marcus Hooker had 17 points and Carrington Smith added 16 as No. 2 New Castle (19-4) defeated No. 7 South Fayette (16-8) in a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal at Geneva.

New Castle will play Belle Vernon in the semifinals Wednesday.

Girls basketball

Chartiers Valley 49, West Allegheny 42 — Megan McConnell had 27 points and Mackenzie Wagner scored 21 as No. 6 Chartiers Valley (18-6) won a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal at Baldwin.

Patience Ashaolu had 20 points for No. 3 West Allegheny (17-7).

Gateway 57, Thomas Jefferson 54 — Lexi Jackson had 19 points and Jordan Edwards added 15 to lift No. 7 Gateway (21-3) to a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal victory at Baldwin.

Mary Kromka added 13 points for the Gators, who will play Chartiers Valley in Wednesday's semifinals.

Marina Petruzzi had 20 points for No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (20-4).

Mars 48, Hampton 41 — Tai Johnson scored 24 points to lead No. 4 Mars (19-5) to the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal win over No. 5 Hampton (19-5) at North Hills. Lauren Wasylson added 10 points in the win while Laryn Edwards and Ali Collins paced Hampton with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Mars advances to face the Oakland Catholic in Wednesday's semifinals.

Oakland Catholic 55, Trinity 46 — Sparked by a 23-11 halftime lead, No. 8 Oakland Catholic (16-8) upset No. 1 Trinity (19-4) in a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal at West Allegheny.

Sierra DeAngelo had 15 points and Jayde Boyd and Cierra Christian added 13 each for the Eagles.

Riley DeRubbo had 21 for Trinity.

Bishop Canevin 57, Laurel 32 — Bri Allen had 22 points to guide No. 1 Bishop Canevin (18-4) to a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal victory at Geneva. Diaja Allen had 15 points and Gillan Gustine added 12 for the Crusaders, who will play Mohawk in the semifinals Wednesday.

Caroline Gibson had 14 points for No. 9 Laurel (13-11).

East Allegheny 60, Seton LaSalle 41 — In a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal at Gateway, Amani Johnson scored 26 points to guide No. 2 East Allegheny (23-0) to victory. Alyssa Pollice had 17 points for No. 10 Seton LaSalle (10-14).

Mohawk 53, Avonworth 51 — Carlee Stetler made two free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining to lift No. 4 seed Mohawk (19-4) to a thrilling finish over No. 5 Avonworth (16-8) in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal at Canon-McMillan. Hunter Robinson tied the game with a layup with 22.6 seconds but Avonworth missed three free throws from there that might have won it. Karly McCutcheon had 15 points, Stetler added 13, and Caitlin Carnuche had 12 for Mohawk. Kat Goetz led Avonworth with 16 and Robinson had 11.
