WPIAL playoff basketball roundup for Feb. 23: Trinity boys avenge loss to McKeesport in quarterfinals

It was a month ago to the day when the Trinity boys basketball lost a Section 1 game at McKeesport.

On Friday night, the Hillers got their revenge on a bigger stage.

Dylan Kern had 14 points and Zach Ecker added 11 as the No. 5-seeded Hillers defeated No. 4 McKeesport, 48-39, in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals at Baldwin.

Trinity (20-4), which finished on a 17-6 run, will play No. 1 Mars in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined. The Hillers also clinched a berth in the PIAA tournament.

Terron Taylor had 17 points to lead McKeesport (15-9), which can still reach the PIAA playoffs if Trinity wins the WPIAL title.

Mars 70, Hampton 51 — Paced by Robby Carmody's 23 points, No. 1 Mars (19-4) rolled to a WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinal victory at Butler.

Cade Hetzler had 17 points and Andrew Recchia added 14 for the Fightin' Planets, who will play Trinity in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Adam Bittner had 14 points, Isaac DeGregorio scored 13, Josh Winek had 12 and Colby Mignogna tallied 10 for No. 8 Hampton (11-13).

Chartiers-Houston 53, Serra Catholic 44 — Cameron Hanley had 22 points and Zach Southern added 14 to guide No. 5 Chartiers-Houston (19-5) to a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal win at Peters Township.

Khalil Smith had 21 points for No. 4 Serra Catholic (18-5).

OLSH 73, Springdale 46 — The No. 2 Chargers (21-2) ended the third quarter with an 18-6 run to roll to a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal at Canon-McMillan. Austin Wigley led four OLSH players in double figures with 18 points and Ricco Tate had nine rebounds. No. 10 Springdale (13-9) was led by junior Mike Zolnierczyk's 25 points.

Girls basketball

Mt. Lebanon 53, Norwin 40 — Haley Sabol scored 16 points and Alyssa Hyland added 15 to lead No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (13-11) past No. 4 Norwin (12-10) in a WPIAL Class 6A quarterfinal-round game at Peters Township. The Blue Devils, who trailed by a point at halftime, pulled away on a 20-9 run. Mt. Lebanon was 19 for 26 from the free-throw line compared to Norwin's 3-for-10 showing. Jayla Wehner's 11 points led the Knights.

North Allegheny 45, Upper St. Clair 26 — Rachel Martindale had 19 points to guide No. 1 North Allegheny (23-0) to a Class 6A first-round win at Fox Chapel.

The Tigers led 17-7 at halftime after shutting out No. 9 Upper St. Clair, 8-0, in the second quarter.

North Allegheny will play No. 5 Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Kate Groninger had 10 points for the Panthers (13-10).

Sewickley Academy 42, Aquinas Academy 35 — Led by Kylie Smith, No. 4 Sewickley Academy (14-5) earned a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal win at Northgate.

Mary Casamassa had 21 points for No. 5 Aquinas (15-6).

West Greene 73, Rochester 45 — McKenna Lampe had 25 points and her sister, Madison, added 18 as No. 2 West Greene (21-2) won a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal game at Canon-McMillan. Kaitlyn Rizor tallied 12 points for the Pioneers, who will play No. 3 Quigley Catholic in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Lydia Bable had 14 points for No. 7 Rochester (13-8).

Winchester Thurston 53, Cornell 17 — Ayanna Townsend had 21 points, 12 rebound and nine steals, and Gia Thorpe added 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals to guide No. 1 Winchester Thurston (17-5) to a Class A quarterfinal victory at North Hills.

Nya Nicholson added nine points for the Bears, who opened the game on a 15-3 run.
