Southmoreland has a new football coach.

The district on Thursday night hired Dave Keefer to replace Mark Adams, who resigned after five seasons.

Keefer, not to be confused with the Dave Keefer who coaches Greensburg Salem, is Southmoreland's track and field and golf coach. He is a longtime history teacher in the district.

Keefer is a former football assistant at Bentworth, Greensburg Central Catholic and Mt. Pleasant.

Southmoreland athletic director Charlie Swink said the district wanted a coach who teaches in the district.

“He brings a winning attitude and will make a good coach,” Swink said. “He is very confident and he knows the kids because he is around them.”

Adams went 12-45 in five seasons.

The Scotties went 0-9 last year as injuries took a toll on an already depleted roster.

Southmoreland has not been to the playoffs since 1979.
