Camp Hill edges CWNC boys soccer in overtime of PIAA Class A final

HERSHEY — Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic had a comeback in the second half to take the PIAA Class A boys soccer championship to overtime Saturday afternoon at Hersheypark Stadium, but Camp Hill scored in the golden goal session to win the title 3-2.

Dylan Mayanja took a cross from the right side from Jake Coniglio and scored from the middle of the box 4 minutes, 51 seconds into the extra period for the winner.

“He beat our guy around the corner and played a dangerous ball across the goal and they put it away,” North Catholic coach Aaron Kelly said.

Ryan Augustine scored twice in the second half to bring North Catholic (23-2) back from a 2-0 halftime deficit.

For his first goal, he tapped in a ball in the box after Nick Milas had a restart from 10 yards away. That made the score 2-1 with 27:19 left to play.

Camp Hill (25-1) controlled the ball for most of the following 20 minutes, but with the clock running under six minutes, Augustine kept a ball in bounds to the right of the net and was tackled in the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, Augustine put the ball inside the right post to tie the game 2-2 with 5:57 left.

Kelly was hardly surprised at Augstine's success.

“He meshes with the offense really well,” said Kelly, who added that he has confidence in a number of players to take penalty kicks.

The Trojans had a chance to take the lead in regulation with a corner 30 seconds after the tying goal, but that opportunity did not produce a shot.

“We knew we had to play a perfect second half, and we did,” Kelly said. “And when you get to overtime, it is anyone's game.”

The first half was a series of frustrating events for the Trojans.

Down 1-0 at the time, Joe Kearney got a shot on the center of the net with Camp Hill goalie Noah Smeriglio stuck near the left post. But defender Matthew Little was able to stop it and get the ball out of the box quickly.

Ryan Rothermel also came close to tying the game 1-1 with 7:30 left in the half, heading a ball in, but the play was whistled offsides.

Those near-misses were between two first-half goals that gave the Lions control of the game early on.

Less than eight minutes into the contest, Joshua Goodyear scored on a header to put the defending state champions up 1-0. Amias Colestock assisted on the first goal the Trojans had allowed since the regular season.

A tackle in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Camp Hill with 54 seconds left before halftime. Mayanja went to the right side for the score and a 2-0 advantage.

Camp Hill had the statistical advantage, leading in shots 9-7 and corners 11-4.

Smeriglio made fours saves, while Keaton Jennings stopped six shots for the Trojans.
