Shaler hockey snapped a losing skid in the best way possible.
The Titans scored three third-period goals to beat Montour, 4-3, in PIHL Class AA action last Monday.
The Titans (2-3-1) won despite being outshot 45-38.
Montour built a 3-0 lead on two goals from Dustin Gregach and one by Michael Felsing. Seth Walzer scored the Titans' first goal late in the second period.
Zachary Sarnowski, Adam Baginski and Mitchell Werry added goals in the third period to complete the rally for Shaler.
Wyatt Wolf made 42 saves for the Titans.
Signing day
Three Shaler athletes signed national letters of intent during the early signing period.
Baseball players Patrick Gumto signed with Cal (Pa.), and Christian Seelhorst signed with Seton Hill.
Both previously made verbal commitments.
Golfer Tanner Grzegorczyk also signed with a Division II school, choosing Findlay (Ohio).
Big award
Shaler senior goalkeeper Matt Potock was selected to the all-state team by Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Soccer Association.
Potock recorded three shutouts for a Titans team that finished 7-11 and missed the WPIAL playoffs.
On the girls' side, Molly Malachow was selected all-section honorable mention
Strong start
Washington & Jefferson 141-pound sophomore wrestler Mike Heinl made a strong impression at the Adrian Invitational earlier this month.
Heinl, a Shaler graduate, earned Presidents' Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for bouncing back.
After dropping his first match, Heinl picked up five consecutive wins, including two by pin, to place third. Heinl is off to a 5-1 start this season, putting him on pace to improve on his 14-14 mark from his freshman season.
New coach
Samantha Smyers, who was inducted to the Shaler Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016, will be leading the girls bowling team this winter.
Smyers, who played collegiately at St. Francis (Pa.), also coaches the girls golf team.
Shawn Pilyih coached both bowling teams last season but will be responsible only for the boys team this season.
Basketball in Germany
Shaler graduate Valerie McQuade scored 93 points in the first eight games with Chemnitz Chemcats, a team in the Germany professional women's basketball team DBBL.
McQuade is second on the team in scoring and is shooting 34 percent from the field, including 40 percent from inside the arc. McQuade has also contributed 30 rebounds and nine steals.
The Chemcats are in ninth place and off to a 3-6 start.
