Westmoreland notebook: Golf season shifts to individual postseason

Golf season shifts to the individual postseason this week as section tournaments are played around the WPIAL.

Boys tournaments will be Monday and Tuesday, and girls sectionals will take place Monday through Thursday at various sites.

Local sites Monday include Greensburg Country Club (boys 1-AA) and Norvelt Golf Club (girls 1-AA). Youghiogheny Country Club, Norwin's home course, will host boys Section 1-AAA on Tuesday.

Players must meet or better the designated target score — within 10 shots of the course rating for boys and within 20 shots for girls — to advance in the postseason.

Boys Class AAA has a semifinal round before the finals. Boys AA and girls AAA and AA qualifiers advance to the WPIAL finals.

The boys semifinals will be Sept. 26 at The Links at Spring Church and Donegal Highlands Golf Course.

The AA boys finals will be Sept. 28 at Allegheny Country Club,. The boys AAA finals are set for Oct. 3 at Nemacolin Country Club, and the girls finals will be Oct. 4 at Diamond Run Golf Club.

Pevarnik makes Palmer team

Latrobe junior Brady Pevarnik, who won the Westmoreland County Coaches Association title Thursday, and Franklin Regional junior Palmer Jackson, who finished second, were named to the WPGA team that will play a team of Tri-State PGA pros in the annual Palmer Cup matches Thursday at Latrobe Country Club.

Pevarnik will play Gordon Vietmeier in the morning singles before he teams with friend and rival Jackson in the afternoon four-ball matches.

Bumoskey transfers

Rylan Bumoskey will play basketball at his father's high school after all. The 6-foot, 220-pound senior guard transferred from Jeannette to Greensburg Salem. His father, Roy, was a standout for the Golden Lions in the early 1990s.

Greensburg Salem coach Craig Mankins said the WPIAL approved the transfer. Rylan had been home-schooled but will attend classes at Greensburg Salem, Mankins said.

Game Knights

To no one's surprise, the Norwin girls soccer team has been strong over the first week of the season. The Lady Knights (5-0), the Tribune-Review's No. 1 team in Class 4A and the top-ranked team in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, opened with four shutouts by a combined score of 29-0, before pulling out a 2-1 win over Seneca Valley.

Norwin has not lost in section since 2013, a streak of 41 consecutive games. Hempfield tied Norwin last year, 1-1. The teams play again Monday at Hempfield.

Konek ranked

Prep Star Hoops, a girls basketball recruiting service, released its top 100 player rankings for the Class of 2019. Southmoreland newcomer Cali Konek, the former Imani Christian scoring phenom who averaged 45.4 points as a freshman, is ranked No. 34. She is the only WPIAL player on the list.

A 5-foot-6 point guard, Konek spent a year at Riverdale Baptist (Md.) before transferring to Southmoreland.

Pair for Luptak

Norwin senior Gage Luptak, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound middle linebacker/tight end, announced his first two college offers Wednesday. Carnegie Mellon and St. Vincent offered Luptak with both schools interested in him as a tight end.

Houseman offered

Yough senior lineman Scott Houseman is the latest player from the area to get a scholarship offer from Seton Hill. The school is trying to round up local prospects.

The offer is the first for Houseman, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound center and defensive tackle.

The Griffins also offered Penn-Trafford senior lineman Will Mayr (6-foot-2, 250 pounds), Greensburg Salem senior quarterback/linebacker Jake Hoyle (6-1, 205) and Latrobe senior quarterback/linebacker Jason Armstrong (6-2, 220).

Recruiting locally

Howard University offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, a Greensburg Salem grad, plans to recruit the WPIAL every chance he gets. He already extended an offer to Jeannette quarterback/defensive back Robert Kennedy.

“If a kid on the moon can play, I want to get him,” the enthusiastic Marion said. “We're going to recruit all over. But the thing with Pittsburgh kids: you'll never have to question their toughness.”
