Wrestling notebook: Ligonier Valley’s Patrick claims Holiday Classic title

Ligonier Valley senior Robby Patrick won the 2017 Sheetz Holiday Wrestling tournament for the second consecutive year over the weekend.

He defeated Shamokin‘s Jacob Carpenter, 14-1, to win the 170-pound title.

Teammate Alex Caldwell placed second at 152.

Mt. Pleasant had three placewinners.

Damian George was second at 106, Doug Bittner took sixth at 120 and Al Miscovich placed seventh at 138.

WPIAL trio win titles

Franklin Regional's Colton Camacho, Penn-Trafford's Jobe Chishko and Seneca Valley's Louis captured titles at the King of the Mountain tournament Saturday at Central Mountain in Lock Haven.

Camacho, who nearly defeated Jefferson-Morgan senior Gavin Teasdale at the Eastern Area Invitational on Dec. 9, won four matches and defeated Council Rock South's Ben Radner, 8-5, to win the 132-pound title.

Freshman teammate Carter Dibert placed third at 106.

Chishko also went 4-0. He pinned Boiling Springs' Kollin Myers in the first period of the 152-pound title bout.

Teammates Nick Coy placed third at 138 and John Bachar finished fifth at 181.

Burrell didn't have any champions, but Trent Valovchik (113) and Bryan Gaul (126) placed fourth, Ian Oswalt (120) was fifth and Shawn Gates (160) placed sixth.

Seneca Valley placed fourth overall in the tournament, and Newell led the way win the 126-pound title. He defeated Kenny Kiser of Saegertown, 15-0, in the final.

The Raiders had six placewinners, including a fourth-place finish by Alejandro Herrera-Rondon at 106.

Hensons transfer to Waynesburg

The sons of West Virginia coach Sammie Henson have transferred Waynesburg.

Jackson Henson, a senior, recently placed fourth at 138 pounds at the Beast of the East tournament in Delaware. He was a two-time West Virginia state champion for University High School in Morgantown. He's a WVU recruit.

Wyatt, a freshman, competes at 120.

Waynesburg placed 14 at Beast of the East. The Raiders' other place winners were Caleb Morris, eighth at 132; Trey Howard, seventh at 152; and Kyle Homet, fourth at 170.

North Allegheny and West Mifflin also competed. West Mifflin heavyweight Gerald Brown placed third, and North Allegheny heavyweight Derek Devine was eighth.

Kiski Area senior heavyweight Isaac Reid is sidelined after a pulmonary embolism diagnosis. … Jeannette sophomore Justin Cramer, who wrestles for Hempfield in a co-op, plans to compete and put off possible knee surgery until after the season. … The Burrell/Hempfield wrestling match at Jeannette on Tuesday was postponed because of a scheduling conflict. The schools will attempt to reschedule the match. … Frazier's Thayne Lawrence and Southmoreland's Tyler Griffiths battled in a dual match with Lawrence pulling out an 8-3 win. Both are PIAA place winners.
