Silver and Gold for WPIAL Tennis Players in PIAA Singles and Doubles Finals in Hershey

It was a mixed bag in a successful weekend for district singles and doubles girls tennis players in Hershey during the conclusion of the 2017 PIAA Girls Singles and Doubles State Championships. 3-A players brought home gold to Southwestern Pennsylvania while 2-A players returned with silver.
WPIAL consolation winner and third seed Ashley Huang of North Allegheny won two matches on Friday, then knocked off WPIAL champ Maria Santilli Saturday morning in the PIAA 3-A Semifinals before closing the deal on her state championship run with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Eliza Askarova of George Washington HS.
Then the Fox Chapel duo of Amanda Nord and Charlotte James added a PIAA championship to their earlier captured WPIAL girls doubles title with a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the state finals over Melissa Vizcardo and Alyssa Sarver of Pine-Richland in a rematch of the WPIAL 3-A girls doubles title match.
In Class 2-A, WPIAL singles tennis champion Laura Greb of Knoch reached the state championship match but fell in straight sets to Brenna Magliochetti of Bethlehem Catholic 6-2. 7-6 (7-5). In 2-A doubles, another district duo reached the finals as consolation winners Devyn Campbell and Sydni Lewis of Beaver won three straight matches to reach the state finals but fell 6-3, 6-1 to Sarah DeMarco and Tara Thomas of Villa Maria Academy.
